Robotically-driven surgical instrument with E-beam driver
A surgical severing and stapling instrument, suitable for laparoscopic and endoscopic clinical procedures, clamps tissue within an end effector of an elongate channel pivotally opposed by an anvil. Various embodiments are configured to be operably attached to a robotic system to receive actuation/control motions therefrom.
1. A surgical system, comprising:
a shaft defining a shaft axis;
a first rotary output shaft operably supported by a housing;
a rotary drive screw extending along said shaft axis and actuatable by said first rotary output shaft;
a second rotary output shaft operably supported by said housing and actuatable independently of said first rotary output shaft;
a surgical end effector, comprising:
a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein one of said first jaw and said second jaw is movable relative to the other of said first jaw and said second jaw between open and closed positions upon application of jaw control motions thereto by said first rotary output shaft; and
a distal firing beam head axially movable between a starting position and an ending position within said first jaw and said second jaw, said distal firing beam head configured to slidably engage each of said first jaw and said second jaw upon application of a firing motion thereto, wherein said surgical system further comprises:
an elongate shaft assembly operably coupled to said surgical end effector, said elongate shaft assembly comprising a firing shaft operably interfacing with said distal firing beam head to apply said firing motion thereto, said firing shaft defining a firing shaft axis that extends along said shaft axis; and
a rotary firing drive shaft extending along said shaft axis and actuatable by said second rotary output shaft, wherein said rotary firing drive shaft is operably coupled to said firing shaft, wherein said second rotary output shaft rotates about a rotary output axis such that rotation of said second rotary output shaft about said rotary output axis imparts a firing motion to said distal firing beam head to thereby axially move said distal firing beam head within said first jaw and said second jaw.
2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said rotary output axis extends along said shaft axis.
3. The surgical system of claim 2 , wherein said rotary output axis comprises a first rotary output axis, and wherein said second rotary output shaft is rotatable about a second rotary output axis extending along said shaft axis.
4. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a first motor configured to actuate said first rotary output shaft and a second motor configured to actuate said second rotary output shaft.
5. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein said starting position is proximal to said ending position, and wherein said firing beam head is configured to deploy staples during a firing stroke upon moving from said starting position to said ending position.
6. A surgical stapling assembly, comprising:
an attachment interface attachable to and detachable from a surgical instrument control interface, wherein said attachment interface comprises:
a first rotary input; and
a second rotary input actuatable independently of said first rotary input;
a shaft extending distally from said attachment interface and defining a shaft axis;
an end effector attached to said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:
a first jaw;
a second jaw movable relative to said first jaw to clamp tissue between said first jaw and said second jaw; and
a firing beam head, comprising:
a first jaw-engaging cam configured to engage said first jaw during a firing stroke; and
a second jaw-engaging cam configured to engage said second jaw during the firing stroke;
a closure drive comprising a first rotary drive shaft extending along said shaft axis actuatable by said first rotary input, wherein actuation of said closure drive moves said first jaw relative to said second jaw;
a firing drive comprising a second rotary drive shaft extending along said shaft axis actuatable by said second rotary input, wherein actuation of said firing drive fires said end effector.
7. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first rotary input is rotatable about a first axis extending along said shaft axis.
8. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein said second rotary input is rotatable about a second axis extending along said shaft axis.
9. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 7 , wherein said second rotary drive shaft comprises a second drive screw.
10. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said first rotary drive shaft comprises a first drive screw.
11. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , further comprising a first motor configured to actuate said closure drive and a second motor configured to actuate said firing drive.
12. The surgical stapling assembly of claim 6 , wherein said firing beam head is actuatable by said firing drive through the firing stroke to staple and cut tissue from an unfired position to a fired position, and wherein said unfired position is proximal to said fired position.
