Abstract

A percussive therapy system includes a percussive therapy device that includes a housing, an electrical source, a motor positioned in the housing, a switch for activating the motor, a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor, and an attachment configured to be operatively connected to a distal end of the push rod assembly of the percussive massage device and to provide at least one therapeutic effect to a user. The attachment may include at least one of an actuator configured to provide the at least one therapeutic effect to the user and a sensor configured to obtain at least one of biometric data of the user and information regarding operation of the percussive therapy device.

Claims (26)

1. A percussive therapy system comprising:

a percussive therapy device comprising a housing, an electrical source, a motor positioned in the housing, a switch for activating the motor, a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor, wherein a distal end of the push rod assembly comprises an attachment member, and

an attachment configured to be operatively connected to the attachment member of the percussive therapy device, wherein the attachment includes a first set of electrical contacts that electrically connect to a second set of electrical contacts associated with the attachment member when the attachment is operatively connected to the attachment member, and wherein the attachment comprises a temperature sensor configured to obtain biometric data of a user.

2. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 wherein the attachment includes an actuator configured to provide at least one therapeutic effect to the user, wherein the actuator comprises at least one of a vibration actuator, a heating actuator, a cooling actuator, and an exfoliating actuator.

The percussive therapy system of claim 1 further comprising a routine controller that is configured to initiate a protocol configured to provide user instructions to apply the attachment to a first body part until the temperature sensor in the attachment senses that the first body part has reached a predetermined temperature.

4. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 wherein the percussive therapy system is configured to determine at least one characteristic of the attachment.

5. The percussive therapy system of claim 4 wherein the at least one characteristic of the attachment comprises a type of the attachment, a sensor of the attachment, and an actuator of the attachment.

6. The percussive therapy system of claim 4 wherein the attachment is configured to wirelessly transmit the at least one characteristic to the percussive therapy device.

The percussive therapy system of claim 1 wherein the attachment member includes first and second balls biased outwardly therefrom, wherein the first and second balls comprise the second set of electrical contacts that are in electrical communication with the electrical source, wherein when the attachment is operatively connected to the attachment member, the first and second balls removably secure the attachment on the attachment member and electrically connect the attachment to the percussive therapy device.

The percussive therapy system of claim 1 wherein the housing of the percussive therapy device includes first, second and third handle portions that cooperate to at least partially define a handle opening, wherein the first handle portion defines a first axis, the second handle portion defines a second axis and the third handle portion defines a third axis, wherein the first, second and third axes are co-planar, wherein the first handle portion is generally straight, wherein the second handle portion is generally straight, and wherein the third handle portion is generally straight, such that a user can grasp any of the first, second or third handle portions independently to use the percussive therapy device.

9. The percussive therapy system of claim 1 , comprising a second sensor located within the housing and configured to obtain information regarding operation of the percussive therapy device, wherein the second sensor comprises at least one of a force meter, a gyroscope, and an accelerometer.

10. A method of providing at least one therapeutic effect to a user, the method comprising the steps of:

obtaining a percussive therapy device comprising a housing, an electrical source, a motor positioned in the housing, a switch for activating the motor, a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor,

obtaining an attachment configured to be operatively and electrically connected to the percussive therapy device, wherein the attachment is configured to provide percussive massage therapy to the user and to obtain thermal data of the user, and

operating the percussive therapy device using the attachment.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the attachment is further configured to provide at least one therapeutic effect to the user, and wherein the at least one therapeutic effect includes vibration, percussion, heating, cooling, and exfoliation.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising the step of determining at least one characteristic of the attachment.

13. The method of claim 12 further comprising the step of providing a prompt communicating the at least one characteristic of the attachment to the user.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the attachment is further configured to obtain at least one of blood-oxygen content data, blood flow data, angular position data, linear position data, and force magnitude data.

15. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of providing a recommendation to the user, wherein the recommendation is generated based on the thermal data of the user.

16. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of determining that a first body part of the user has reached a predetermined temperature based on the thermal data of the user, and providing user instructions to the user to cease providing the at least one therapeutic effect to the first body part when the first body part has reached the predetermined temperature.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein the thermal data is used in accordance with a protocol.

18. A percussive therapy system comprising:

a percussive therapy device comprising a housing, a motor positioned in the housing, and a push rod assembly operatively connected to the motor and configured to reciprocate in response to activation of the motor; and

a first attachment configured to be operatively and electrically connected to the percussive therapy device and to provide a therapeutic effect to a user, wherein the first attachment comprises a first sensor, the first sensor being a biometric temperature sensor; and

a second attachment configured to be operatively and electrically connected to the percussive therapy device, wherein the second attachment comprises a second sensor of a different type than the first sensor.
