Abstract

Items of video content offered for viewing on a video-on-demand (VOD) platform of a digital TV service provider are each assigned a respective title and hierarchical address corresponding to hierarchically-arranged categories and subcategories within which the title for the video content is to be categorized. The title is listed in a location of an electronic program guide (EPG) using the same categories and subcategories as its hierarchical address. Any TV subscriber can access the EPG and navigate through its categories and subcategories to find a title for viewing on the TV. The EPG dynamically adjust its display listings of each level of categories, subcategories, and titles in order to minimize the number of remote control keypresses needed for a viewer to navigate to a title of interest. In one basic form, the EPG display is reordered by listing more frequently visited categories or subcategories first, and other less frequently visited categories or subcategories lower on the listing or out-of-sight on another page of the display.

Claims (33)

1. A subscriber device for providing video content to be viewed by a subscriber of a video-on-demand system, wherein the video content is provided to the subscriber device using a wireless broadband connection and is viewed using a hierarchically-arranged interactive electronic program guide, stored on non-volatile computer readable memory operatively connected to the subscriber device, the subscriber device comprising:

at least one processor; and

a device memory operatively connected to the at least one processor including processor-readable instructions and a first application comprising a plurality of viewer interfaces,

wherein the processor readable instructions, when executed, perform the steps of:

(a) transmitting, from the subscriber device to a first digital television service provider system associated with a first television provider via the wireless broadband connection, a request for electronic authorization;

(b) receiving, by the subscriber device from the first digital television service provider system via the wireless broadband connection, an electronic authorization to access privileges associated with a subscriber account of the subscriber;

(c) transmitting, from the subscriber device to the first digital television service provider system via the wireless broadband connection, a first electronic request to access first video-on-demand electronic media content;

(d) receiving, by the subscriber device from the first digital television service provider system via the wireless broadband connection, first individualized electronic program guide data for populating a first set of one or more templates associated with a first individualized electronic program guide viewable via a first viewer interface of the plurality of viewer interfaces;

wherein the first individualized electronic program guide data is generated at the first digital television service provider system in real time by:

(i) accessing, from one or more non-transitory processor readable memory devices operatively connected to the first digital television service provider system, electronic viewing data for the subscriber; and

(ii) generating, the first individualized electronic program guide data for video-on-demand electronic media content, based at least in part on:

(1) electronic viewing data for the subscriber, and

(2) video-on-demand metadata,

wherein the electronic viewing data for the subscriber is generated, by the first digital television service provider system, based on information associated with the subscriber device and information associated with an internet-connected subscriber device,

wherein the video-on-demand electronic media content is obtained from a video-on-demand content delivery system of the first digital television service provider system associated with the first digital television service provider that has obtained the video-on-demand electronic media content and respective video-on-demand metadata associated with the video-on-demand electronic media content, the respective video-on-demand metadata comprising respective title data and respective category data;

(e) searching, using a search interface of the plurality of interfaces provided via the application, video-on-demand metadata in a video content database to generate a list of video titles with specific characteristics, wherein the list of video titles includes a first title;

(f) receiving, at the subscriber device, a selection of the first title;

(g) transmitting, from the subscriber device to the first digital television service provider system via the wireless broadband connection, a first video-on-demand media request for respective video-on-demand electronic media content associated with the first title;

wherein the electronic viewing data is updated, by the first digital television service provider system, based on information associated with the first video-on-demand media request to generate updated electronic viewing data;

(h) receiving, by the subscriber device from the first digital television service provider system via the wireless broadband connection, the respective video-on-demand electronic media content identified in the first video-on-demand media request for display on a first display associated with the subscriber device.

2. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the wireless broadband connection comprises a local area broadband network.

3. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the respective video-on-demand electronic media content is received at the subscriber device in step (h) in a packetized data stream.

4. The subscriber device of claim 3 , wherein the subscriber device decodes the packetized data stream and presents the respective video-on-demand electronic content on a display operatively connected with the subscriber device.

5. The subscriber device of claim 4 , wherein while the respective video-on-demand electronic content is displayed, the subscriber device is configured for a user to start, stop, pause, rewind, or replay the respective video-on-demand electronic content.

6. The subscriber device of claim 5 , wherein while the respective video-on-demand electronic content is displayed, the subscriber device is configured for a user to further fast forward the respective video-on-demand electronic program.

7. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a set top box.

8. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device uses Internet Protocol.

9. The subscriber device of claim 8 , wherein the subscriber device is configured to be used with an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) system.

10. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a TV.

11. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a digital phone.

12. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a media player.

13. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a game console.

14. The subscriber device of claim 1 , wherein the subscriber device is a computer.
