Abstract

Examples of enterprise management using managed virtual machines are described. A guest management agent executed within a managed virtual machine receives a command to update a user context configuration of the managed virtual machine from a management service. The command to update the user context configuration of the managed virtual machine is transferred through an inter-process communication (IPC) channel from the guest management agent within the managed virtual machine to a host management agent executed on the host device outside the managed virtual machine. The command to update the user context configuration of the managed virtual machine is implemented using a host desktop hypervisor.

Claims (40)

1 . A method implemented by instructions executed by at least one computing device, the method comprising:

executing a managed virtual machine on a host device, the managed virtual machine comprising a guest management agent that communicates with a management service over a network;

receiving, by the guest management agent, a command to update a user context configuration of the managed virtual machine, the command being received from the management service;

transferring the command to update the managed virtual machine through an inter-process communication (IPC) channel from the guest management agent within the managed virtual machine to a host management agent executed on the host device outside the managed virtual machine; and

implementing, by the host management agent, the command to update the user context configuration of the managed virtual machine using a host desktop hypervisor.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

storing, by the host management agent, a managed virtual machine user context configuration outside of the managed virtual machine, wherein the managed virtual machine user context configuration is specified by the command to update the user context configuration.

3 . The method according to claim 2 , further comprising:

deleting, by the host virtual machine management agent, the managed virtual machine user context configuration once the command to update the user context configuration is implemented.

4 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine is implemented by updating the managed virtual machine, and restarting the managed virtual machine once updated.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine comprises at least one network location to download at least one portion of a managed virtual machine user context configuration.

6 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine specifies at least one application to add or remove from the managed virtual machine.

7 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the host desktop hypervisor the IPC channel comprises at least one remote procedure call that can be utilized to provide the IPC channel.

8 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying instructions executable by at least one computing device wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the at least one computing device to at least:

execute a managed virtual machine on a host device, the managed virtual machine comprising a guest management agent that communicates with a management service over a network;

receive, by the guest management agent, a command to update a user context configuration of the managed virtual machine, the command being received from the management service;

transfer the command to update the managed virtual machine through an inter-process communication (IPC) channel from the guest management agent within the managed virtual machine to a host management agent executed on the host device outside the managed virtual machine; and

implement, by the host management agent, the command to update the user context configuration of the managed virtual machine using a host desktop hypervisor.

9 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

store, by the host management agent, a managed virtual machine user context configuration outside of the managed virtual machine, wherein the managed virtual machine user context configuration is specified by the command to update the user context configuration.

10 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 9 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

delete, by the host virtual machine management agent, the managed virtual machine user context configuration once the command to update the user context configuration is implemented.

11 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine is implemented by updating the managed virtual machine, and restarting the managed virtual machine once updated.

12 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine comprises at least one network location to download at least one portion of a managed virtual machine user context configuration.

13 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine specifies at least one application to add or remove from the managed virtual machine.

14 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium according to claim 8 , wherein the host desktop hypervisor the IPC channel comprises at least one remote procedure call that can be utilized to provide the IPC channel.

15 . A system, comprising:

at least one computing device; and

instructions accessible by the at least one computing device, wherein the instructions are executed causing the at least one computing device to at least:

execute a managed virtual machine on a host device, the managed virtual machine comprising a guest management agent that communicates with a management service over a network;

receive, by the guest management agent, a command to update a user context configuration of the managed virtual machine, the command being received from the management service;

transfer the command to update the managed virtual machine through an inter-process communication (IPC) channel from the guest management agent within the managed virtual machine to a host management agent executed on the host device outside the managed virtual machine; and

implement, by the host management agent, the command to update the user context configuration of the managed virtual machine using a host desktop hypervisor.

16 . The system according to claim 15 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

store, by the host management agent, a managed virtual machine user context configuration outside of the managed virtual machine, wherein the managed virtual machine user context configuration is specified by the command to update the user context configuration.

17 . The system according to claim 16 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the at least one computing device to at least:

delete, by the host virtual machine management agent, the managed virtual machine user context configuration once the command to update the user context configuration is implemented.

18 . The system according to claim 15 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine is implemented by updating the managed virtual machine, and restarting the managed virtual machine once updated.

19 . The system according to claim 15 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine comprises at least one network location to download at least one portion of a managed virtual machine user context configuration.

20 . The system according to claim 15 , wherein the command to update the managed virtual machine specifies at least one application to add or remove from the managed virtual machine.
