Abstract

A network system includes a main network implementing a conventional network protocol and a BPD subtree implementing a custom network protocol. The main network comprises a plurality of MPD nodes, the conventional network protocol being configured for MPD nodes. The BPD subtree comprises a plurality of BPD nodes, the custom network protocol being configured for BPD nodes. The custom network protocol defines smaller and simpler subtrees relative to the conventional network protocol. As a result, the custom network protocol defines less complex functions relative to the conventional network protocol, including functions for discovery, messaging, and loop management. A root node of the BPD subtree is connected with an MPD node of the main network and one or more descendant nodes of the BPD subtree. The root node implements the conventional network protocol and the custom network protocol.

Claims (45)

1. A method comprising:

connecting, by the root BPD node, to one or more descendant BPD nodes, wherein the root BPD node and the one or more descendant BPD nodes comprise a BPD subtree within the wireless network; and

performing, by the root BPD node, one or more operations based on a second network protocol that is different than the first network protocol, wherein the second network protocol specifies a second maximum number of nodes that can be included in the BPD subtree, wherein the second maximum number of nodes is less than the first maximum number of nodes.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first network protocol specifies the first maximum number of node hops that can occur within the subtree of the main network; and

the second network protocol specifies the second maximum number of node hops that can occur within the BPD subtree, wherein the second maximum number of node hops is different than the first maximum number of node hops.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the first network protocol specifies that multiple parent nodes are permitted for respective nodes included in the subtree within the main network; and

the second network protocol specifies that a single parent node is permitted for respective nodes included in the BPD subtree.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising generating, by the root BPD node, a routing table comprising one or more entries, wherein a respective entry corresponds to a respective descendant BPD node included in the one or more descendant BPD nodes, the respective entry includes a network address for the respective descendant BPD node, and the respective entry includes a network address for a parent node associated with the respective descendant BPD node.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, by the root BPD node, whether to permit a discovering node to join the BPD subtree based on a routing table generated at the root BPD node and a set of subtree parameters specified by the second network protocol.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining whether to permit the discovering node to join the BPD subtree comprises determining a first number of node hops between the root BPD node and the discovering node based on a network address of a potential parent node of the discovering node and an entry in the routing table that corresponds to the potential parent node.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the discovering node is not permitted to join the BPD subtree when the first number of node hops exceeds a maximum number of node hops specified in the set of subtree parameters.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, by the root BPD node, a first message from the main network component within the main network that specifies a destination node within the BPD subtree;

determining, by the root BPD node, a node path from the root BPD node to the destination node based on a routing table generated at the root BPD node;

generating, by the root BPD node, a second message that includes the node path; and

transmitting, by the root BPD node, the second message to a child node of the root BPD node based on the node path.

9. One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing program instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a root battery powered device (BPD) node, cause the one or more processors to perform node-based operations by performing the steps of:

connecting the root battery powered device (BPD) node to a main network component that resides within a main network of a wireless network, wherein the main network implements a first network protocol that specifies a first maximum number of nodes that can be included in a subtree of the main network;

connecting the root BPD node to one or more descendant BPD nodes, wherein the root BPD node and the one or more descendant BPD nodes comprise a BPD subtree within the wireless network; and

performing one or more operations at the root BPD node based on a second network protocol that is different than the first network protocol, wherein the second network protocol specifies a second maximum number of nodes that can be included in the BPD subtree, wherein the second maximum number of nodes is less than the first maximum number of nodes.

10. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein:

the first network protocol specifies a first set of parameters that define a structure of the subtree in the main network; and

the second network protocol specifies a second set of parameters that define a structure of the BPD subtree, wherein the second set of parameters are different than the first set of parameters.

11. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 10 , wherein the node-based operations further comprise determining whether to permit a discovering node to join the BPD subtree based on the second set of parameters.

12. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 11 , wherein the node-based operations further comprise generating a routing table comprising one or more entries, wherein a respective entry corresponds to a respective descendant BPD node included in the one or more descendant BPD nodes, the respective entry includes a network address for the respective descendant BPD node, and the respective entry includes a network address for a parent node associated with the respective descendant BPD node.

13. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 12 , wherein determining whether to permit the discovering node to join the BPD subtree comprises determining a first number of node hops between the root BPD node and the discovering node based on the routing table.

14. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 9 , wherein the node-based operations further comprise:

receiving a first message from the main network component within the main network that specifies a destination node within the BPD subtree; and

determining a node path from the root BPD node to the destination node based on a routing table generated at the root BPD node.

15. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 14 , wherein the node-based operations further comprise:

generating a second message that includes the node path; and

transmitting the second message to a child node of the root BPD node based on the node path.

16. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable media of claim 15 , wherein:

the first message traverses the main network in accordance with the first network protocol; and

the second message traverses the BPD subtree in accordance with the second network protocol.

17. A root battery powered device (BPD) node that resides within a wireless network, the root BPD node comprising:

a memory storing instructions; and

a processor that is coupled to the memory and, when executing the instructions performs operations comprising:

connecting the root BPD node to a main network component that resides within a main network of the wireless network, wherein the main network implements a first network protocol that specifies a first maximum number of nodes that can be included in a subtree of the main network;
