Abstract

A surgical instrument comprising a rotatable and translatable firing member is disclosed.

Claims (45)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a jaw frame including a threaded jaw aperture and a distal jaw end; and

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and

a firing drive, comprising:

an electric motor comprising a rotatable output;

a rotatable drive shaft rotatably and translatably engaged with said rotatable output, wherein said rotatable drive shaft comprises a proximal threaded portion and a distal threaded portion, wherein said proximal threaded portion is threadably engaged with said threaded jaw aperture, wherein said proximal threaded portion comprises a first thread pitch and said distal threaded portion comprises a second thread pitch which is different than said first thread pitch, and wherein said rotatable drive shaft translates distally toward said distal end when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in a first direction and translates proximally away from said distal end when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in an opposite direction; and

a tissue cutting knife threadably engaged with said distal threaded portion, wherein said tissue cutting knife comprises

a knife edge;

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw during a firing stroke;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a threaded drive aperture threadably engaged with said distal threaded portion of said rotatable drive shaft, wherein said tissue cutting knife translates distally relative to said rotatable drive shaft when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in said first direction and translates proximally relative to said rotatable drive shaft when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in an opposite direction.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein, for a given speed of said electric motor, said rotatable drive shaft translates relative to said first jaw at a first advancement rate and said tissue cutting knife translates relative to said rotatable drive shaft at a second advancement rate which is different than said first advancement rate.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said second advancement rate is faster than said first advancement rate.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein said first advancement rate is faster than said second advancement rate.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein, for a given speed of said electric motor, said rotatable drive shaft translates relative to said first jaw at a first advancement rate and said tissue cutting knife translates relative to said first jaw at a second advancement rate which is different than said first advancement rate.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein said second advancement rate is faster than said first advancement rate.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein said second advancement rate is twice as fast as said first advancement rate.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein, for a given speed of said electric motor, said rotatable drive shaft translates relative to said first jaw at a first advancement rate and said tissue cutting knife translates relative to said rotatable drive shaft at a second advancement rate which is the same as said first advancement rate.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a staple cartridge positioned in said first jaw.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises an electrode.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein said second jaw comprises an electrode.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a staple cartridge positioned in said second jaw.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises an electrode.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein said first jaw comprises an electrode.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a handle, wherein said shaft extends from said handle.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said proximal threaded portion comprises right-hand threads and said distal threaded portion comprises left-hand threads.

18. A stapling instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an end effector extending from said shaft, wherein said end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a jaw frame including a threaded jaw interface and a distal jaw end;

a second jaw rotatable relative to said first jaw; and

a replaceable staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and

a firing drive, comprising:

an electric motor comprising a rotatable output;

a rotatable drive shaft rotatably and translatably engaged with said rotatable output, wherein said rotatable drive shaft comprises a proximal threaded portion and a distal threaded portion, wherein said proximal threaded portion comprises a first thread pitch and said distal threaded portion comprises a second thread pitch which is different than said first thread pitch,

wherein said proximal threaded portion is threadably engaged with said threaded jaw interface, and wherein said rotatable drive shaft translates distally toward said distal end when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in a first direction and translates proximally away from said distal end when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in an opposite direction; and

a firing member threadably engaged with said distal threaded portion, wherein said firing

member comprises

a first cam configured to engage said first jaw during a firing stroke;

a second cam configured to engage said second jaw during said firing stroke; and

a threaded drive interface threadably engaged with said distal threaded portion of said rotatable drive shaft, wherein said firing member translates distally relative to said rotatable drive shaft when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in said first direction and translates proximally relative to said rotatable drive shaft when said rotatable drive shaft is rotated in an opposite direction.

19. The stapling instrument of claim 18 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises an electrode.
