Abstract

A rail warning system using wireless portable transmitters/receivers. The rail warning system uses chirp spread spectrum modulation scheme, and alerts personnel in work zones on or near train tracks as well as optionally, on track equipment and train operators , of approaching trains or on track equipment. Portable wayside devices may also be positioned on the rail web, optionally magnetically, to alert work personnel, allowing for secure placement but also portability to other locations on the same track or adjacent tracks.

Claims (41)

1. A portable roadway protection system comprising:

a first portable device having a first wireless transceiver

a second portable device configured to be carried by a first rail worker, the second portable device having a second wireless transceiver configured to transmit one or more second signals to the first portable device

a third portable device configured to be carried by a second rail worker, the third portable device having a third wireless transceiver configured to transmit one or more third signals with the first portable device

where:

based on the second and third signals, the first portable device is configured to determine a first distance between the second portable device and the third portable device; and

based on the distance being greater than a threshold distance, the first portable device is configured to transmit an alert signal.

2. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where, based on the second signals, the first portable device is configured to determine a second distance between the second portable device and the first portable device.

3. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where, based on the third signals, the first portable device is configured to determine a third distance between the third portable device and the first portable device.

4. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where, based on the second signals, the first portable device is configured to determine a fourth distance between the second portable device and a boundary of a work zone.

5. The portable roadway protection system of claim 4 , where, based on the fourth distance being less than a predetermined distance, the first portable device is configured to transmit a warning signal.

6. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where the distance is determined using chirp spread spectrum modulation scheme pulses.

7. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where the first portable device is a wayside device.

8. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where:

the first portable device is configured to transmit the alert signal to the second portable device; and

based on receiving the alert signal, the second portable device is configured to generate a visible alert, an audible alert, or both.

9. The portable roadway protection system of claim 1 , where the first portable device is configured to transmit the alert signal to a fourth portable device.

10. A portable roadway protection system comprising:

a first portable device configured to be carried by a first rail worker, the first portable device including an alert button and a first wireless transceiver;

a plurality of second portable devices, each including a second wireless transceiver configured to communicate with the first wireless transceiver;

a wayside device in communication with the first and second wireless transceivers;

where:

based on activation of the alert button, the first portable device is configured to transmit an alert signal to each of the plurality of second portable devices; and

based on receiving the alert signal, the plurality of second portable devices are configured to generate at least one of an audible, visual, or haptic alert;

the wayside device is configured to determine a respective distance between the first portable device and each of the plurality of second portable devices.

11. The portable roadway protection system of claim 10 , where the first and second wireless transceivers are configured to transmit and receive signals using a chirp spread spectrum modulation scheme.

12. The portable roadway protection system of claim 10 , where:

based on the communication between the first and second wireless transceivers, the first portable device is configured to determine a distance between the first portable device and at least one of the plurality of second portable devices; and

based on the distance being greater than a distance threshold, initiate an alert at the first portable device.

13. The portable roadway protection system of claim 10 , where, based on at least one of the respective distances being greater than a distance threshold, the wayside device is configured to transmit a warning signal to the first portable device.

14. The portable roadway protection system of claim 13 , where based on receiving the warning signal, the first portable device is configured to generate at least one of an audible, visual, or haptic alert.

15. A method of alerting rail personnel, the method comprising:

determining, at a first portable device, a distance between a second portable device configured to be carried be a first rail worker and a third portable device configured to be carried by a second rail worker; and

based on the distance being greater than a threshold distance, initiating transmission of a first alert signal to the second portable device;

where the alert signal is configured to generate a visual an audible, visual, or haptic alert at the second portable device.

16. The method of claim 15 , where the distance is determined using chirp spread spectrum modulation scheme pulses.

17. The method of claim 15 , where based on the distance being greater than the threshold distance, initiating transmission of the first alert signal to the first portable device.

18. The method of claim 15 , comprising alerting personnel on or near train tracks of the presence of an approaching train or on track equipment.

19. The method of claim 18 , where wherein the alerting personnel comprises:

activating an alert button on the first portable device; and

based on activation of the alert button, initiating transmission of a second alert signal to the second alert device.
