Abstract

The present disclosure relates to battery plates which are useful in optimizing the power and energy density of a batter assembly by having discrete active materials. The present disclosure relates to a battery plate having: a) a substrate having a first surface opposing a second surface; b) one or more active materials disposed on the first surface, second surface, or both the first surface and the second surface of the substrate; and wherein the one or more active materials include two or more discrete active material regions.

Claims (41)

1. A battery plate comprising:

a) a substrate having a first surface opposing a second surface, wherein the substrate comprises a non-conductive polymer;

b) two or more active materials disposed on the first surface or the second surface of the substrate;

wherein the two or more active materials disposed on the first surface or the second surface form two or more discrete active material regions;

wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are deposited adjacent to one another in a plane which is parallel to the first surface or the second surface of the substrate;

wherein at least one of the two or more discrete active material regions includes a first lead oxide;

wherein at least another of the two or more discrete active material regions includes a second lead oxide different from the first lead oxide;

wherein the battery plate is free of a grid upon which the two or more active materials are disposed on;

wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are directly adjacent to one another such that the first lead oxide is adjacent to and in contact with the second lead oxide; and

wherein the battery plate is a monopolar plate, a bipolar plate, a dual polar plate, or a combination thereof.

2. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein the two or more active materials are in a form of a paste.

3. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more discrete active material regions includes a tribasic lead oxide, a tetrabasic lead oxide, or both.

4. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein the first lead oxide includes a tribasic lead oxide and the second lead oxide includes a tetrabasic lead oxide.

5. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more discrete active material regions is a high-energy paste while at least another of the two or more discrete active material regions is a high-power paste.

6. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the two or more discrete active material regions includes one or more conductive additives.

7. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are substantially symmetric or substantially asymmetric.

8. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are substantially continuous relative to one another.

9. The battery plate of claim 1 , wherein the two or more active materials are separated into the two or more discrete active material regions.

10. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more active materials having a higher pore surface area than one or more other active materials.

11. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more high pore surface area materials which have a pore surface area of about 8 m 2 /g or higher to about 20 m 2 /g or less.

12. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more low pore surface materials which have a porosity of about 0 m 2 /g or greater to about 5 m 2 /g or less.

13. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more active materials including a higher density material than one or more other active materials.

14. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more high density materials which have a density of about 3.7 g/cc or greater to about 4.1 g/cc or less.

15. The battery plate of claim 9 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more low density materials which have a density of about 2.6 g/cc or greater to about 2.9 g/cc or less.

16. A battery plate comprising:

a) a substrate having a first surface opposing a second surface, wherein the substrate comprises a non-conductive polymer;

b) two or more active materials disposed on the first surface or the second surface of the substrate;

wherein the two or more active materials are separated into two or more discrete active material regions;

wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are deposited adjacent to one another in a plane which is parallel to the first surface or the second surface of the substrate;

wherein at least one of the two or more discrete active material regions includes a first lead oxide;

wherein at least another of the two or more discrete active material regions includes a second lead oxide different from the first lead oxide;

wherein the battery plate is free of a grid upon which the two or more active materials are disposed on;

wherein the battery plate is a monopolar plate, a bipolar plate, a dual polar plate, or a combination thereof;

wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are substantially continuous relative to one another and form one or more patterns on the first surface or on the second surface of the substrate; and

wherein the two or more discrete active material regions are directly adjacent to one another such that the first lead oxide is adjacent to and in contact with the second lead oxide.

17. The battery plate of claim 16 , wherein the two or more active materials include one or more active materials having a higher pore surface area than one or more other active materials.
