Tissue resection device with motors and control circuitry
Methods and systems for modifying tissue use a pressurized fluid stream carrying coherent light energy. The methods and systems may be used for resecting and debulking soft and hard biological tissues. The coherent light is focused within a stream of fluid to deliver energy to the tissue to be treated.
1. A tissue removal device comprising:
a sheath;
a shaft within the sheath, the shaft having a proximal end and a distal end;
at least one energy source carried on a tube and positioned in an energy delivery region on the shaft configured to deliver energy radially outwardly to ablate tissue spaced a distance away from the shaft;
an aspiration lumen on the shaft configured to be coupled in fluidic communication to a vacuum source to remove tissue products;
a lumen in the shaft configured to be coupled in fluidic communication with a fluid source to provide a fluid to remove tissue products; and
motors and control circuitry operatively coupled to the shaft, the tube, and the sheath to control movements of the shaft, the tube and the sheath relative to each other.
2. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the shaft has a width in a range from 1 mm to 10 mm and a length in a range from 15 cm to 25 cm.
3. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the energy source is movable relative to the shaft to selectively direct the energy at different regions of the tissue.
4. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , further comprising an expandable anchor near the distal end for anchoring in a bladder.
5. The tissue removal device of claim 4 , wherein the expandable anchor comprises a balloon adopted to expand to occupy an interior of the bladder when it is inflated.
6. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the energy source comprises a laser energy source.
7. The tissue removal device of claim 6 , wherein the energy source further comprises a mirror for reflecting laser energy from the laser energy source.
8. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the energy source comprises a conductive fluid source and a radiofrequency energy source.
9. The tissue removal device of claim 1 , wherein the energy source comprises an electrode.
10. The tissue removal device of claim 9 , wherein the electrode comprises a laterally projecting electrode configured to engage against tissue and deliver radio frequency energy to ablate the tissue.
11. The tissue removal device of claim 9 , wherein the electrode projects laterally from the tube.
12. The tissue removal device of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to ablate tissue and to cauterize tissue after ablation by changing a radiofrequency energy.
13. The tissue removal device of claim 9 , wherein the electrode is configured to deliver electrical energy in either a monopolar or bipolar mode.
