Abstract

A stalk roll may be configured to be mounted upon a stalk roll drive shaft of a corn harvesting header, wherein the stalk roll drive shaft has a generally square cross-sectional shape. The stalk roll may comprise a main cylinder with a plurality of flutes extending radially from the main cylinder along the length of the main cylinder. A taper may be positioned toward the front end of the main cylinder. The flutes may be configured such this with differing edges to facilitate stalk movement into and through the ear separation zone to the plant separation zone. The flutes may be configured such that a bladeless area proximate to the nose cone on each of two stalk rolls of an opposing pair cooperate to form at stalk engagement gap in at least one moment in time per revolution of the stalk rolls.

Claims (19)

1. A stalk roll having multiple flutes comprising:

a. a main cylinder;

b. a full flute engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said full flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein said full flute includes a sharp edge;

c. a full flute engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said full flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein said full flute includes a flat edge;

d. a reduced flute engaged with said main cylinder having a length along said longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said reduced flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein the length of said full flute with the sharp edge is greater than said length of said reduced flute;

e. a support member positioned on an interior surface of said main cylinder, wherein said support member includes a first planar surface and a second planar surface that are oriented perpendicularly with respect to one another;

f. a second support member positioned on said interior surface of said main cylinder and axially spaced from said support member, wherein said second support member includes a first planar surface and a second planar surface that are oriented perpendicularly to one another, and wherein said first planar surface of said first support member is coplanar with said first planar surface of said second support member.

2. A stalk roll having multiple flutes comprising:

a. a main cylinder;

b. a full flute engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said full flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein said full flute includes a sharp edge;

c. a full flute engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said full flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein said full flute includes a flat edge;

d. a reduced flute engaged with said main cylinder having a length along said longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said reduced flute extends outward from said main cylinder, wherein the length of said full flute with the sharp edge is greater than said length of said reduced flute;

wherein the stalk roll is characterized by six flutes positioned equally around the main cylinder in the configuration whereby a full flute having a sharp edge is located opposite a full flute having a flat edge, a reduced flute positioned on each side of said full flutes.

3. A stalk roll having multiple flutes comprising:

a. a main cylinder;

b. at least two full sharp flutes engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said at least two full sharp flutes extend outward from said main cylinder, wherein said at least two full sharp flutes each include a sharp edge;

c. at least two full flat flutes engaged with said main cylinder and having a length along a longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein said full flat flute extend outward from said main cylinder, wherein said at least two full flutes each includes a flat edge;

d. at least four reduced flutes equally interspersed between the at least two full sharp flutes and the at least two full flat flutes, each of the at least four reduced flutes engaged with said main cylinder having a length along said longitudinal axis of said main cylinder, wherein the at least four reduced flutes extend outward from said main cylinder, wherein a length of each of the four reduced flutes is less than the length of at least one of the two full sharp flutes and the length of at least one of the full flat flutes;

wherein two of the at least two sharp flutes are positioned on the cylinder opposite each other, and two of the at least two flat flutes are positioned on the cylinder opposite each other.
