Abstract

A medical catheter includes an elongate member and an insert. The elongate member has proximal and distal end portions and defines a longitudinal axis through the proximal and distal end portions. The elongate member includes a wall at least partially defining a longitudinal lumen and defining a side opening extending radially from an outer surface of the wall to the longitudinal lumen. The insert is at least partially disposed within the side opening and at least partially defines an insert passage in fluid communication with the longitudinal lumen. The elongate member includes a first material defining the side opening and the insert includes a second material different from the first material.

Claims (30)

1. A medical catheter comprising:

an elongate member defining a longitudinal axis and including a wall, a septum, and a septum extension, the septum disposed within the wall such that the wall and the septum together define a first lumen and a second lumen, the septum extending to the septum extension disposed distal to the first and second lumens, wherein the septum extension comprises a first material; and

a second material incorporated into a distal end of the septum extension, the second material being different from the first material,

wherein the second material comprises a polymer, and

wherein the second material has a Shore A hardness greater than 95 durometer.

2. The medical catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second material is more radiopaque than the first material.

3. The medical catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises an anti-thrombogenic agent.

4. The medical catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises an antimicrobial agent.

5. The medical catheter of claim 1 , wherein the second material comprises a metal.

6. The medical catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a septum extension insert at least partially disposed on the septum extension, the septum extension insert comprising the second material.

7. The medical catheter of claim 6 , wherein the septum extension insert comprises at least one of an anti-thrombogenic agent or an antimicrobial agent.

8. The medical catheter of claim 7 , wherein the at least one of the antithrombogenic agent or the antimicrobial agent is impregnated in the septum extension insert.

9. The medical catheter of claim 6 , wherein the septum extension insert is configured to enclose rough or sharp edges of the septum extension.

10. The medical catheter of claim 6 , wherein the septum extension insert defines a radiused blood contacting surface configured to reduce shear stresses on blood entering and exiting the first or second lumen.

11. The medical catheter of claim 6 , wherein the septum extension insert defines a channel configured to receive an end face of the septum extension.

12. The medical catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a wall insert, wherein a distal portion of the elongate member defines first and second axial openings in fluid communication with the respective first and second lumens, and wherein the wall insert is disposed along at least one of the first or second axial openings, and wherein the wall insert comprises a material different from a material of the distal portion of the elongate member.

13. A medical catheter, comprising:

an elongate member defining a longitudinal axis and including a wall, a septum, and a septum extension, the septum disposed within the wall such that the wall and the septum together define a first lumen and a second lumen, the septum extending to the septum extension disposed distal to the first and second lumens, wherein the septum extension comprises a first material and a second material,

wherein the second material is incorporated into a distal end of the septum extension, and

wherein the second material is different from the first material; and

a septum extension insert at least partially disposed on the septum extension, the septum extension insert comprising the second material,

wherein the septum extension insert comprises at least one of an anti-thrombogenic agent or an antimicrobial agent, and

wherein the at least one of the anti-thrombogenic agent or the antimicrobial agent is coated on the second material of the septum extension insert.

14. A medical catheter comprising:

an elongate member comprising proximal and distal end portions and defining a longitudinal axis extending through the proximal and distal end portions, the elongate member including a wall, a septum, and a septum extension, the septum disposed within the wall such that the wall and the septum together define a first lumen and a second lumen, the septum extending to the septum extension disposed distal to the first and second lumens; and

an extension insert secured to a distalmost end of the septum extension, the septum extension comprising a first material and the extension insert comprising a second material different from the first material.

15. The medical catheter of claim 14 , wherein the second material is more radiopaque than the first material.

16. The medical catheter of claim 14 , wherein the second material comprises at least one of an anti-thrombogenic agent or an antimicrobial agent.

17. The medical catheter of claim 14 , wherein the second material comprises a polymer.

18. The medical catheter of claim 14 wherein the septum extension insert defines a radiused blood contacting surface configured to reduce shear stresses on blood entering and exiting the first or second lumen.
