Abstract

A method of reassembling a local disk manager (LDM) and array group (AGRP) includes starting a physical extent manager (PEM) configured to run on a number of nodes. The PEM on each node is configured to manage an AGRP running on the same node. A number of LDMs are reassembled, and each LDM is configured to manage virtual disks on each of the nodes. Once enough LDMs are reassembled, an AGRP can be reassembled.

Claims (34)

1. A method comprising:

starting a physical extent manager (PEM) configured to run on each of a plurality of nodes in a cluster comprising a plurality of virtual disks;

in response to starting the PEM, reassembling a plurality of local disk managers (LDMs) that are each located on one of the plurality of nodes, wherein each one of the plurality of LDMs produce array group (AGRP) reassembly data associated with a set of virtual disks, from the plurality of virtual disks, that correspond to its node;

reassembling, on a first node in the plurality of nodes, at least one AGRP based on the AGRP reassembly data from each one of the plurality of LDMs, wherein the at least one AGRP comprises a plurality of arrays, and wherein each array is assigned a performance group and comprises a portion of the plurality of virtual disks corresponding to the assigned performance group; and

migrating the at least one AGRP to a second node in the plurality of nodes.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs provides the AGRP reassembly data and state for all physical extents (PEs) managed by the LDM.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs contains metadata information for the at least one AGRP.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when fewer than all LDMs are reassembled.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when two LDMs are not yet reassembled.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs identify one or more physical extents, and wherein each physical extent in the one or more physical extents comprises a unit of physical storage.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein each of the at least one AGRP can be assembled on one node at a time, and on any node in the cluster.

8. A system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory to store instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

starting a physical extent manager (PEM) configured to run on each of a plurality of nodes in a cluster comprising a plurality of virtual disks;

in response to starting the PEM, reassembling a plurality of local disk managers (LDMs) that are each located on one of the plurality of nodes, wherein each one of the plurality of LDMs produce array group (AGRP) reassembly data associated with a set of virtual disks, from the plurality of virtual disks, that correspond to its node;

reassembling, on a first node in the plurality of nodes, at least one AGRP based on the AGRP reassembly data from each one of the plurality of LDMs, wherein the at least one AGRP comprises a plurality of arrays, and wherein each array is assigned a performance group and comprises a portion of the plurality of virtual disks corresponding to the assigned performance group; and

migrating the at least one AGRP to a second node in the plurality of nodes.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs provides the AGRP reassembly data and state for all physical extents (PEs) managed by the LDM.

10. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs contains metadata information for the at least one AGRP.

11. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when fewer than all LDMs are reassembled.

12. The system of claim 8 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when two LDMs are not yet reassembled.

13. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs identify one or more physical extents, and wherein each physical extent in the one or more physical extents comprises a unit of physical storage.

14. The system of claim 8 , wherein each of the at least one AGRP can be assembled on one node at a time, and on any node in the cluster.

15. A non-transitory machine-readable medium having instructions stored therein, which when executed by a processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

starting a physical extent manager (PEM) configured to run on each of a plurality of nodes in a cluster comprising a plurality of virtual disks;

in response to starting the PEM, reassembling a plurality of local disk managers (LDMs) that are each located on one of the plurality of nodes, wherein each one of the plurality of LDMs produce array group (AGRP) reassembly data associated with a set of virtual disks, from the plurality of virtual disks, that correspond to its node;

reassembling, on a first node in the plurality of nodes, at least one AGRP based on the AGRP reassembly data from each one of the plurality of LDMs, wherein the at least one AGRP comprises a plurality of arrays, and wherein each array is assigned a performance group and comprises a portion of the plurality of virtual disks corresponding to the assigned performance group; and

migrating the at least one AGRP to a second node in the plurality of nodes.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs provides the AGRP reassembly data and state for all physical extents (PEs) managed by the LDM.

17. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein each of the plurality of LDMs contains metadata information for the at least one AGRP.

18. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when fewer than all LDMs are reassembled.

19. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the at least one AGRP is reassembled when two LDMs are not yet reassembled.

20. The non-transitory machine-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein each of the at least one AGRP can be assembled on one node at a time, and on any node in the cluster.
