Abstract

A surgical instrument includes an ultrasonic transducer, a shaft defining a longitudinal axis, and an end effector at a distal end of the shaft. The end effector includes an ultrasonic blade driven by the ultrasonic transducer to treat tissue with ultrasonic energy. A tissue treatment portion of the ultrasonic blade includes a linear blade region extending parallel to the longitudinal axis, a curved blade region extending distally from the linear blade region along a curved path that deflects laterally from the longitudinal axis, an upper treatment side, a lower treatment side, a first lateral side having a first sweeping side surface, and a second lateral side having a second sweeping side surface. The sweeping side surfaces define respective first and second side edges of a transverse cross-section of the tissue treatment portion, and are configured such that the first and second side edges are parallel to one another.

Claims (30)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

(a) a shaft assembly extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein the shaft assembly includes a distal shaft end portion having a first shaft feature and a second shaft feature; and

(b) an end effector arranged at the distal shaft end portion and extending distally therefrom, wherein the end effector includes an ultrasonic blade having a proximal blade region and a distal blade region, wherein the proximal blade region has a linear blade region including a first cutout feature and a second cutout feature, wherein the first and second cutout features are respectively positioned in alignment with the first and second shaft features for enhanced clearance between the first and second shaft features and the proximal blade region,

wherein the distal blade region has a curved blade region extending distally from the linear blade region along a curved path such that the first and second cutout features on the linear blade region are proximal of the curved blade region.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the first cutout feature longitudinally extends along the proximal blade region.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , further comprising a coupling feature coupled to the distal shaft end portion, and wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the coupling feature for clearance between the coupling feature and the proximal blade region.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the end effector further includes a clamp arm movably coupled to the distal shaft end portion via the coupling feature.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the coupling feature includes a pin, and wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the pin for clearance between the pin and the proximal blade region.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the end effector further includes a clamp arm movably coupled to the distal shaft end portion via the pin.

7. A surgical instrument, comprising:

(a) a shaft assembly extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein the shaft assembly includes a distal shaft end portion having a first shaft feature;

(b) an end effector arranged at the distal shaft end portion and extending distally therefrom, wherein the end effector includes an ultrasonic blade having a proximal blade region with a first cutout feature, wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the first shaft feature for enhanced clearance between the first shaft feature and the proximal blade region; and

(c) a coupling feature coupled to the distal shaft end portion, and wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the coupling feature,

wherein the coupling feature includes a pin, and wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the pin.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the end effector further includes a clamp arm movably coupled to the distal shaft end portion via the pin.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the first cutout feature is configured to provide clearance between the coupling feature and the proximal blade region.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 9 , wherein the first cutout feature is configured to provide clearance between the pin and the proximal blade region.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the end effector further includes a clamp arm movably coupled to the distal shaft end portion via the pin.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the first cutout feature is configured to provide clearance between the pin and the proximal blade region.

13. A surgical instrument, comprising:

(a) a shaft assembly extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein the shaft assembly includes a distal shaft end portion having a first shaft feature;

(b) an end effector arranged at the distal shaft end portion and extending distally therefrom, the end effector including:

(i) a clamp arm, and

(ii) an ultrasonic blade having a proximal blade region with a first cutout feature, wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the first shaft feature for enhanced clearance between the first shaft feature and the proximal blade region; and

(c) a coupling feature coupled to the distal shaft end portion pivotally coupling the clamp arm relative to the ultrasonic blade, wherein the clamp arm is configured to selectively pivot through a pivot plane relative to the ultrasonic blade between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein the first cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the coupling feature, and wherein the first cutout feature is offset from the pivot plane.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the distal shaft end portion has a second shaft feature, wherein the proximal blade region further includes a second cutout feature, and wherein the second cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the second shaft feature for clearance between the second shaft feature and the proximal blade region, wherein the second cutout feature is positioned in alignment with the coupling feature, and wherein the second cutout feature is offset from the pivot plane.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 14 , wherein the first cutout feature is positioned on a first side of the pivot plane, and wherein the second cutout feature is position on a second, opposite side of the pivot plane.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , wherein the first and second cutout features are positioned on the proximal blade region symmetrically about the pivot plane.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the first cutout feature is positioned at a blade longitudinal location corresponding to the first shaft feature at a shaft longitudinal location.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the first cutout feature longitudinally extends along the proximal blade region.
