Abstract

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving, by a tracking server from a first computing device, a request to establish a search party to locate a tracking device associated with the tracking server. The method includes, until a threshold number of computing devices have been added to the search party: identifying one or more candidate second computing devices for addition to the search party, each candidate second computing device satisfying criteria for inclusion in the search party; adding one or more of the candidate second computing devices to the search party in response to receiving an acceptance of a request sent to the candidate second computing devices to join the search party; determining that a number of second computing devices added to the search party fails to satisfy the threshold number of computing devices; and modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

Claims (56)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, by a tracking server from a first computing device of a plurality of computing devices, a request to establish a search party to locate a tracking device associated with the tracking server, the search party comprising a subset of the plurality of computing devices; and

until a criterion for establishing the search party is satisfied:

identifying, by the tracking server, one or more second computing devices of the plurality of computing devices for addition to the search party, each second computing device satisfying criteria for inclusion in the search party;

adding, by the tracking server, one or more of the second computing devices to the search party in response to receiving an acceptance of a request sent to the second computing devices to join the search party;

determining, by the tracking server, that the criterion for establishing the search party is not satisfied after the one or more of the second computing devices have been added to the search party; and

modifying, by the tracking server, the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criterion for establishing the search party comprises a threshold number of second computing devices added to the search party.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a threshold distance between a current location of a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices and a location associated with the tracking device; and

wherein modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises modifying the threshold distance.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a threshold reputation of a user associated with a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices, wherein a reputation of the user associated with the second computing device is based on previous participation of the user in one or more search parties; and

wherein modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises modifying the threshold reputation.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a threshold distance between a historical location associated with a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices and a location associated with the tracking device over a threshold period of time; and

wherein modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises modifying the threshold distance or modifying the threshold period of time.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a preexisting relationship on a social network between a user associated with a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices and a user of the first computing device.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the request sent to the second computing devices to join the search party comprises an invitation from a user of the first computing device to join the search party.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

further modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party after determining that a threshold amount of time has passed.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

after modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party at least once, eliminating the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

adding, by the tracking server, one or more of the second computing devices to the search party without receiving the acceptance of the request to join the search party.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

selecting, based on the request to establish the search party, an additional criterion for establishing the search party;

determining that the additional criterion for establishing the search party is not satisfied; and

modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

providing a last known location of the tracking device to each second computing device added to the search party.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

generating a visual representation of the search party; and

providing the visual representation to the first computing device or one or more of the second computing devices added to the search party.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining one or more metrics demonstrating progress of the search party; and

providing a visual representation of the one or more metrics to the first computing device.

15. A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media coupled to one or more of the processors and comprising instructions operable when executed by one or more of the processors to cause the system to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a first computing device of a plurality of computing devices, a request to establish a search party to locate a tracking device, the search party comprising a subset of the plurality of computing devices; and

until a criterion for establishing the search party is satisfied:

identifying one or more second computing devices of the plurality of computing devices for addition to the search party, each second computing device satisfying criteria for inclusion in the search party;

adding one or more of the second computing devices to the search party in response to receiving an acceptance of a request sent to the second computing devices to join the search party;

determining that the criterion for establishing the search party is not satisfied after the one or more of the second computing devices have been added to the search party; and

modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the criterion for establishing the search party comprises a threshold number of second computing devices added to the search party.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a threshold distance between a current location of a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices and a location associated with the tracking device; and

wherein modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises modifying the threshold distance.

18. One or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media embodying software that is operable when executed by one or more processors of a computing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a first computing device of a plurality of computing devices, a request to establish a search party to locate a tracking device, the search party comprising a subset of the plurality of computing devices; and

until a criterion for establishing the search party is satisfied:

identifying one or more second computing devices of the plurality of computing devices for addition to the search party, each second computing device satisfying criteria for inclusion in the search party;

adding one or more of the second computing devices to the search party in response to receiving an acceptance of a request sent to the second computing devices to join the search party;

determining that the criterion for establishing the search party is not satisfied after the one or more of the second computing devices have been added to the search party; and

modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party.

19. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 18 , wherein the criterion for establishing the search party comprises a threshold number of second computing devices added to the search party.

20. The one or more computer-readable non-transitory storage media of claim 18 , wherein the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises a threshold distance between a current location of a second computing device of the plurality of computing devices and a location associated with the tracking device; and

wherein modifying the criteria for inclusion in the search party comprises modifying the threshold distance.
