Abstract

A method of operating a tonneau cover and a tailgate of a vehicle, including: transmitting one or more signals to a first control module to open or lower the tailgate; determining a position of the tonneau cover with the first control module or a second control module and transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to a mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to open the tonneau cover if the tonneau cover is determined by the first control module and/or the second control module to be in a closed position; and then lowering the tailgate.

Claims (28)

1. A method of operating a tonneau cover and a tailgate of a vehicle, the method comprises:

transmitting one or more signals to a first control module to open or lower the tailgate;

determining a position of the tonneau cover with the first control module or a second control module and transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to a mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to open the tonneau cover if the tonneau cover is determined by the first control module and/or the second control module to be in a closed position; and then

lowering the tailgate,

wherein after a transmission gear of the vehicle is changed, the method comprises checking a position of the tonneau cover with the first control module and/or the second control module.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to the mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to close the tonneau cover after the lowering step.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises: transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to the mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to close the tonneau cover during the lowering step.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein after the lowering step, the method comprises: further opening the tonneau cover.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein during the lowering step, the method comprises: further opening the tonneau cover.

6. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises emitting one or more audible sounds and/or visual lights before, during, or after the determining, opening, and/or the lowering steps.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein during the opening step, the tonneau cover is pivoted upwardly away from the tailgate.

8. The method according to claim 1 , wherein during the opening step, the tonneau cover is rolled back away from the tailgate and towards a passenger area of the vehicle.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises moving the tonneau cover to the closed position after the step of checking the position of the tonneau cover.

10. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises transmitting one or more signals from the first control module and/or the second control module to the tonneau cover to close the tonneau cover if precipitation is detected by a sensor.

11. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises communicating one or more signals from the first control module and/or the second control module to the tonneau cover to stop or open the tonneau cover if an anti-pinch mechanism detects an obstruction between the tonneau cover and the tailgate.

12. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method comprises displaying a video feed inside of the vehicle of a region inside of a cargo area and/or behind the vehicle.

13. A method of operating a tonneau cover and a tailgate of a vehicle, the method comprises:

transmitting one or more signals to a first control module to raise or close the tailgate;

determining a position of the tonneau cover with the first control module or a second control module and transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to a mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to open the tonneau cover if the tonneau cover is determined by the first control module and/or the second control module to be in a closed position; and then

raising the tailgate,

wherein after a transmission gear of the vehicle is changed, the method comprises checking a position of the tonneau cover with the first control module and/or the second control module.

14. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the method comprises: transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to the mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to close the tonneau cover after the raising step.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the method comprises: transmitting by the first control module and/or the second control module one or more signals to the mechanism associated with the tonneau cover to close the tonneau cover during the raising step.

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the method comprises emitting one or more audible sounds and/or visual lights before, during, or after the determining, opening, and/or the raising steps.

17. The method according to claim 13 , wherein during the opening step, the tonneau cover is pivoted upwardly away from the tailgate.

18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein during the opening step, the tonneau cover is rolled back away from the tailgate and towards a passenger area of the vehicle.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the determining step is executed by the first control module.

20. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the method comprises moving the tonneau cover to the closed position after the step of raising the tailgate.
