Abstract

A surgical access system includes a connector including an arm, a coupling element, a rod, and a ridged slider. The arm includes first and second notched sections disposed in opposed lateral sides thereof. The coupling element includes a body section defining an opening therethrough, and opposed tabs protruding therefrom that are configured to receive the second notched section therebetween such that the arm is pivotably coupled to the coupling element. The rod includes a shaft having a plurality of angled grooves defined partially along a length thereof. The rod extends through the opening of the coupling element and the first notched section of the arm. The ridged slider includes a first surface having a plurality of ridges extending along a partial length thereof. The ridged slider extends through the coupling element with the plurality of ridges operably engaged with the plurality of angled grooves of the rod.

Claims (23)

1. A blade for a surgical access system, the blade comprising:

a proximal portion including a protruding portion for releasable engagement by the surgical access system;

a medial portion having a central aperture defined therein and extending distally from and transverse to the proximal portion, the central aperture being central with respect to a lateral axis extending orthogonally to a proximal-distal axis, and the medial portion having two lateral apertures, wherein each lateral aperture is located on an opposite side of the central aperture from the other lateral aperture with respect to the lateral axis, and wherein a distal most end of the central aperture is proximal of proximal most ends of the lateral apertures; and

a distal portion at an opposite end of the medial portion from the proximal portion.

2. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the aperture extends into the proximal portion.

3. The blade of claim 2 , wherein the medial portion extends at an acute angle relative to the proximal portion.

4. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion extends transverse to the proximal and medial portions.

5. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the central aperture extends into the proximal portion.

6. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the lateral apertures do not extend into the proximal portion.

7. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the proximal portion includes two proximal apertures, each proximal aperture being located on an opposite side of the central aperture from the other central aperture.

8. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the distal portion includes two prongs separated by a recess.

9. The blade of claim 8 , wherein the prongs extend from the medial portion in a direction transverse to a direction along which the medial portion extends from the proximal portion.

10. The blade of claim 9 , wherein the prongs are curved hooks.

11. The blade of claim 9 , wherein the recess extends into the medial portion.

12. The blade of claim 8 , wherein two teeth extend distally from a distal most end of each prong.

13. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the medial portion includes a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end being wider than the proximal end along a lateral axis that extends perpendicular to a proximal-distal axis.

14. The blade of claim 1 , wherein the medial portion is convex in a direction facing toward a direction in which the proximal portion extends and concave in a direction facing away from the direction in which the proximal portion extends.

15. A surgical access system comprising:

a plurality of the blades of claim 1 ; and

an elongate extension device for releasably engaging protrusions of the blades.

16. The surgical access system of claim 15 , wherein the extension device comprises a pair of extension arms extending parallel to one another along an extension axis and defining a protrusion receiving channel therebetween, the extension arms being pivotally biased relative to one another about the extension axis toward a closed position and away from an open position, wherein any protrusions received within the channel are prevented from translating transverse to the extension axis out of the channel when the extension arms are in the closed position, and wherein protrusions received within the channel are free to translate out of the channel in at least one direction transverse to the extension axis when the extension arms are in the open position.

17. The surgical access system of claim 15 , wherein the blades are first blades and the protrusions are first protrusions, and comprising a plurality of second blades that are free of apertures and each of which includes a second protrusion releasably engageable by the extension device.

18. The surgical access system of claim 15 , wherein the extension device is a first extension device and further comprising a second extension device and a beam to which the first and second extension devices may be pivotably coupled at an adjustable distance from one another.
