Abstract

A humidifier system for humidifying a microenvironment in a neonatal incubator includes a reservoir configured to hold water to be evaporated for humidifying the microenvironment. A movable heating element is positioned at a surface level of the water inside a heating chamber so as to heat the water at the surface level inside the heating chamber. The heating element is configured such that it is moved downward within the heating chamber so as to maintain the heating element at the surface level of the water as an amount of water in the reservoir decreases.

Claims (36)

1. A humidifier system for humidifying a microenvironment configured to house a neonate and defined by a hood of a neonatal incubator, the humidifier system comprising:

a reservoir configured to hold water to be evaporated for humidifying the microenvironment;

a humidity sensor configured to sense humidity within the microenvironment;

a user interface configured to receive a selected humidity level for the microenvironment;

a movable heating element positioned at a surface level of the water inside a heating chamber so as to heat the water at the surface level inside the heating chamber; and

a control system configured to control the movable heating element to heat the water in the heating chamber based on a difference between the sensed humidity within the microenvironment and the selected humidity level for the microenvironment;

wherein the heating element is moved downward within the heating chamber as an amount of water in the reservoir decreases so as to maintain the heating element at the surface level of the water; and

wherein the heating element has a hole that accommodates a guide, and wherein the heating element slides down the guide as the heating element moves downward within the heating chamber.

2. The humidifier system of claim 1 , further comprising a water level sensor to sense the surface level of the water within the reservoir and to generate a water level indicator value.

3. The humidifier system of claim 2 , wherein the water level indicator value is to indicate that water is to be added to the reservoir.

4. The humidifier system of claim 2 , wherein the water level sensor is to provide sensed information from the water level sensor to the control system, wherein the control system is to provide at least one control function for the humidifier system.

5. The humidifier system of claim 4 , wherein the at least one control function comprises controlling the humidifier system in order to maintain a humidity level within the heating chamber.

6. The humidifier system of claim 2 , further comprising a temperature sensor.

7. The humidifier system of claim 6 , wherein the humidifier system is configured to provide sensed information from the water level sensor, the humidity sensor, the temperature sensor, or a combination thereof, to athe control system.

8. The humidifier system of claim 7 , wherein the control system is configured to provide at least one control function for the humidifier system, wherein the at least one control function comprises controlling the humidifier system, based at least on the sensed information from the water level sensor, the humidity sensor, and the temperature sensor, in order to maintain a humidity level within the heating chamber.

9. The humidifier system of claim 1 , further comprising a chamber divider to separate the heating chamber within the reservoir.

10. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is puck-shaped, wherein a top side of the puck-shaped heating element is maintained above a water surface and a bottom side of the puck-shaped heating element is maintained at or below the water surface.

11. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the heating chamber is cylindrical.

12. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is maintained at the surface level of the water by a tension spring exerting a spring force calibrated based on a weight of the heating element and a buoyancy force of the water on the heating element to maintain the heating element at the surface level as the amount of water in the reservoir decreases.

13. The humidifier system of claim 12 , wherein the tension spring is configured to provide a constant spring force on the heating element across a range of surface levels from a maximum fill level to a minimum fill level.

14. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is configured to float on the water inside the heating chamber.

15. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the heating element is a silicon puck, wherein a weight of the heating element is less than a buoyancy force of the water acting on the heating element.

16. The humidifier system of claim 1 , wherein the guide is a leadscrew with thread angles calibrated based on a weight of the heating element and a buoyancy force of the water on the heating element to maintain the heating element at the surface level as the amount of water in the reservoir decreases.

17. A neonatal incubator comprising:

a bed configured to support a neonate;

a hood over the bed enclosing a microenvironment configured to house the neonate when supported on the bed;

a humidity sensor configured to sense humidity within the microenvironment;

a user interface configured to receive a selected humidity level for the microenvironment; and

a humidifier system having a control system configured to control humidity of the microenvironment based on a difference between the sensed humidity within the microenvironment and the selected humidity level for the microenvironment, the humidifier system having:

a reservoir configured to hold water to be evaporated for humidifying the microenvironment; and

a movable heating element positioned at a surface level of the water inside a heating chamber so as to heat the water at the surface level inside the heating chamber;

wherein the heating element is moved downward within the heating chamber as an amount of water in the reservoir decreases so as to maintain the heating element at the surface level of the water; and

wherein the heating element slides down a guide as the heating element moves downward within the heating chamber.

18. The neonatal incubator of claim 17 , further comprising a water level sensor to sense a water level within the reservoir and to generate a water level indicator value.

19. The neonatal incubator of claim 18 , further comprising a temperature sensor, wherein the neonatal incubator is to provide sensed information from the water level sensor, the humidity sensor, the temperature sensor, or a combination thereof, to the control system.

20. The neonatal incubator of claim 19 , wherein the control system is to provide at least one control function for the neonatal incubator, wherein the at least one control function comprises controlling the neonatal incubator, based at least on the sensed information from the water level sensor, the humidity sensor, and the temperature sensor, in order to maintain a humidity level within the heating chamber.
