Abstract

Methods and apparatus to verify and/or correct media lineup information are disclosed. Disclosed example apparatus include a signature comparator to, when media presentation data representative of media output by a media device does not correspond to reference data associated with first reference media corresponding to a first station: identify a plurality of first signatures in a database that matches a plurality of second signatures included in the media presentation data, the plurality of first signatures including at least one of first audio signatures or first video signatures, the plurality of second signatures including at least one of second audio signatures or second video signatures generated from the media output by the media device; and determine second reference media corresponding to the plurality of first signatures; and memory to store the media presentation data.

Claims (79)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a signature comparator to, when media presentation data representative of media output by a media device does not correspond to reference data associated with first reference media corresponding to a first station:

identify a plurality of first signatures in a database that matches a plurality of second signatures included in the media presentation data, the plurality of first signatures including at least one of first audio signatures or first video signatures, the plurality of second signatures including at least one of second audio signatures or second video signatures generated from the media output by the media device; and

determine second reference media corresponding to the plurality of first signatures; and

memory to store the media presentation data.

The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a media comparator to compare the media presentation data representative of the media output by the media device to the reference data associated with the first reference media corresponding to the first station to determine whether the media presentation data corresponds to the reference data, the media presentation data collected while the media device was tuned to a first channel number.

The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the signature comparator is to, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, determine that a second station was scheduled to present the second reference media at times at which the second signatures were generated, and further including a media comparator is to relate a first channel number to the second station to create a second channel map to replace a first channel map that relates the first channel number to the first station based on channel lineup information for the media device, the channel lineup information corresponding to a geographic area associated with the media device.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the media presentation data includes a first watermark extracted from the media, the reference data includes a second watermark corresponding to the first station, and further including a watermark identifier to:

look up the first station in the database based on the first channel map; and

obtain the second watermark from the database.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the watermark identifier is to:

determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the second watermark to other watermarks in the media presentation data to determine a third watermark in the media presentation data that matches the second watermark;

determining a time at which the third watermark was collected from media output by the media device; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned at the time based on a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

6. The apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the media presentation data includes an ID3 tag, the ID3 tag including the first watermark.

7. The apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the reference data includes third signatures representative of the first reference media, the first reference media scheduled to be presented on the first station according to a program schedule, and the signature comparator is to:

look up the first station in the database based on the times at which the second signatures were generated; and

obtain the third signatures from the database.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the signature comparator is to determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the third signatures to fourth signatures in the media presentation data, the fourth signatures generated when the media device was tuned to the second channel number; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned based on s script when the fourth signatures were generated, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

9. The apparatus of claim 3 , further including a lineup interpreter to identify the first channel map based on the channel lineup information for the media device.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the media presentation data is generated from audio output from the media device.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , further including a script generator to generate a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

12. At least one non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed, cause one or more processors to at least:

when media presentation data representative of media output by a media device does not correspond to reference data associated with first reference media corresponding to a first station:

identify a plurality of first signatures in a database that match a plurality of second signatures included in the media presentation data, the plurality of first signatures including at least one of first audio signatures or first video signatures, the plurality of second signatures including at least one of second audio signatures or second video signatures generated from the media output by the media device; and

determine second reference media corresponding to the plurality of first signatures.

The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to compare the media presentation data representative of the media output by the media device to the reference data associated with the first reference media corresponding to the first station to determine whether the media presentation data corresponds to the reference data, the media presentation data collected while the media device was tuned to a first channel number.

The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, determine that a second station was scheduled to present the second reference media at times at which the second signatures were generated; and

relate a first channel number to the second station to create a second channel map to replace a first channel map that relates the first channel number to the first station based on channel lineup information for the media device, the channel lineup information corresponding to a geographic area associated with the media device.

The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the media presentation data includes a first watermark extracted from the media, the reference data includes a second watermark corresponding to the first station, and wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to:

look up the first station in the database based on the first channel map; and

obtain the second watermark from the database.

16. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the instructions cause the one or more processors to:

determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the second watermark to other watermarks in the media presentation data to determine a third watermark in the media presentation data that matches the second watermark;

determining a time at which the third watermark was collected from media output by the media device; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned at the time based on a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

17. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the media presentation data includes an ID3 tag, the ID3 tag including the first watermark.

The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the reference data includes third signatures representative of the first reference media, the first reference media scheduled to be presented on the first station according to a program schedule, and wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to:

look up the first station in the database based on the times at which the second signatures were generated; and

obtain the third signatures from the database.

19. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 18 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the instructions cause the one or more processors to determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the third signatures to fourth signatures in the media presentation data, the fourth signatures generated when the media device was tuned to the second channel number; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned based on s script when the fourth signatures were generated, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

20. An apparatus comprising:

memory;

computer readable instructions;

processor circuitry to execute the computer readable instructions to at least:

when media presentation data representative of media output by a media device does not correspond to reference data associated with first reference media corresponding to a first station:

identify a plurality of first signatures in a database that match a plurality of second signatures included in the media presentation data, the plurality of first signatures including at least one of first audio signatures or first video signatures, the plurality of second signatures including at least one of second audio signatures or second video signatures generated from the media output by the media device; and

determine second reference media corresponding to the plurality of first signatures.

21. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 14 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to identify the first channel map based on the channel lineup information for the media device.

22. The at least one non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the media presentation data is generated from audio output from the media device.

23. The non-transitory computer readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the instructions cause the one or more processors to generate a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the processor circuitry is to compare the media presentation data representative of the media output by the media device to the reference data associated with the first reference media corresponding to the first station to determine whether the media presentation data corresponds to the reference data, the media presentation data collected while the media device was tuned to a first channel number.

25. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the processor circuitry is to:

when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, determine that a second station was scheduled to present the second reference media at times at which the second signatures were generated; and

relate a first channel number to the second station to create a second channel map to replace a first channel map that relates the first channel number to the first station based on channel lineup information for the media device, the channel lineup information corresponding to a geographic area associated with the media device.

26. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the media presentation data includes a first watermark extracted from the media, the reference data includes a second watermark corresponding to the first station, and wherein the processor circuitry is to:

look up the first station in the database based on the first channel map; and

obtain the second watermark from the database.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the processor circuitry is to:

determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the second watermark to other watermarks in the media presentation data to determine a third watermark in the media presentation data that matches the second watermark;

determining a time at which the third watermark was collected from media output by the media device; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned at the time based on a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

28. The apparatus of claim 26 , wherein the media presentation data includes an ID3 tag, the ID3 tag including the first watermark.

29. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the reference data includes third signatures representative of the first reference media, the first reference media scheduled to be presented on the first station according to a program schedule, and wherein the processor circuitry is to:

look up the first station in the database based on the times at which the second signatures were generated; and

obtain the third signatures from the database.

30. The apparatus of claim 29 , wherein, when the media presentation data does not correspond to the reference data, the processor circuitry is to determine a second channel number that corresponds to the first station by:

comparing the third signatures to fourth signatures in the media presentation data, the fourth signatures generated when the media device was tuned to the second channel number; and

determining the second channel number to be a channel to which the media device was tuned based on s script when the fourth signatures were generated, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.

31. The apparatus of claim 25 , wherein the processor circuitry is to identify the first channel map based on the channel lineup information for the media device.

32. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the media presentation data is generated from audio output from the media device.

33. The apparatus of claim 20 , wherein the processor circuitry is to generate a script, the script including instructions that, when executed, cause a computing device to issue a sequence of commands to the media device.
