Abstract

A media guidance application may determine a length of a portion of a media asset that the user has missed and compare the length with a threshold length. If the length is greater than the threshold length, the media guidance application may generate a first summary of the missed portion of the media asset based on segments of the missed portion of the media asset that are of a first importance. If the length is not greater than the threshold length, the media guidance application may generate a second summary of the missed portion of the media asset based on segments of the missed portion of the media asset that are of the first importance and the second importance. The media guidance application may generate for display the summary.

storing both the portion of the media asset and the one or more start times and stop times.

6. The method of claim 5 , further comprising:

retrieving the one or more start times and stop times in chronological order; and

playing portions of the portion of the media asset in accordance with the one or more start times and stop times.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving the length of the media asset;

determining a threshold length based on the length of the media asset; and

determining whether the length of the portion of the media asset meets or exceed the threshold length.

determining a plurality of fields associated with the segment data;

generating a data structure for the segment data, wherein the data structure includes the plurality of fields; and

storing each field of the plurality of fields associated with the segment data in a corresponding field of the data structure.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the media asset is a missed portion of the media asset, the method further comprising:

monitoring user interactions to detect when the user switches from the media asset while consuming the media asset;

responsive to detecting the user switching from the media asset, storing a start time of the portion;

monitoring user interactions to detect when the user switches back to the media asset; and

responsive to detecting the user switching back to the media asset, storing a stop time of the portion.

11. A system for generating a summary of a portion of a media asset, the system comprising:

communications circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

determine, based on a length of the portion of the media asset, an importance value, wherein a higher importance value corresponds to a longer portion and a lower importance value corresponds to a shorter portion;

retrieve, using the communications circuitry, a plurality of summary segment identifiers;

for each respective summary segment identifier:

compare an importance field of the respective summary segment identifier with the importance value, wherein a higher importance field indicates that the summary segment identifier corresponds to a more important segment, and a lower importance field indicates that the respective summary segment identifier corresponds to a less important segment; and

in response to determining, based on the comparing, that the importance field of the respective summary segment identifier meets or exceeds the importance value, add the respective summary segment identifier to a set of summary segment identifiers to be included in the summary; and
