Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for portable and compact nitric oxide (NO) generation that can be embedded into other therapeutic devices or used alone. In some embodiments, an ambulatory NO generation system can be comprised of a controller and disposable cartridge. The cartridge can contain filters and scavengers for preparing the gas used for NO generation and for scrubbing output gases prior to patient inhalation. The system can utilize an oxygen concentrator to increase nitric oxide production and compliment oxygen generator activity as an independent device. The system can also include a high voltage electrode assembly that is easily assembled and installed. Various nitric oxide delivery methods are provided, including the use of a nasal cannula.

Claims (22)

1. A nitric oxide (NO) system, comprising:

one or more plasma chambers configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide using a flow of a reactant gas through the one or more plasma chambers; and

a controller configured to communicate with the one or more plasma chambers to regulate the amount of nitric oxide provided from the one or more plasma chambers using one or more parameters as an input to the controller, the controller being configured to communicate with one or more sensors for detecting timing of one or more respiratory events such that the controller is configured to control the system to vary a number of moles of NO delivered per respiratory event by varying a width of a pulse of NO and a flow rate of the product gas delivered to a patient to deliver NO to a specific portion of the one or more respiratory events.

2. The NO system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to determine timing of a delivery of a pulse of NO from the one or more plasma chambers through a delivery device during the one or more respiratory events.

3. The NO system of claim 1 , wherein the parameters relate to one or more of a prescribed dose of NO assigned to a patient, delivery method type, time of day, patient condition, tidal volume, physiologic NO half-life, estimated entrainment fraction, inspired O2 concentration, recent historical dose information, NO oxidation rate, target NO concentration in the lung, patient activity, patient oxygenation, barometric pressure, temperature, patient feedback, physician input, patient respiration rate, patient height, patient ideal body weight, patient current body weight, and patient NO boost request.

4. The NO system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to deliver a pulse of a purge gas through a delivery device between the one or more detected respiratory events to purge at least one of NO and NO2 from the delivery device.

5. The NO system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to vary one or more of pulse parameters including duration, NO concentration and timing with respect to the one or more respiratory events.

6. The NO system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to regulate the amount of nitric oxide generated in the reactant gas using the one or more parameters as input to the controller.

7. A nitric oxide (NO) system, comprising:

a nitric oxide (NO) source comprising one or more plasma chambers configured to generate a product gas containing nitric oxide using a flow of a reactant gas through the one or more plasma chambers; and

a controller configured to regulate the amount of nitric oxide provided from the one or more plasma chambers using one or more parameters as an input to the controller by controlling the production of NO by the one more plasma chambers, the controller being configured to communicate with one or more sensors for detecting timing of one or more respiratory events such that the controller is configured to vary a number of moles of NO delivered per respiratory event by determining timing of a delivery of a pulse of NO, a flow rate of the product gas, and a width of the pulse of NO delivered to a patient,

wherein the pulse of NO is delivered to the patient during a fraction of the duration of the one or more respiratory events to deliver NO to a specific portion of the one or more respiratory events,

wherein the one or more parameters includes information from at least one sensor configured to collect information relating to at least one of the NO source, the product gas, and a medical gas into which the product gas flows.

8. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to vary one or more of pulse parameters including duration, NO concentration and timing with respect to the one or more respiratory events.

9. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein the parameters relate to one or more of a prescribed dose of NO assigned to a patient, delivery method type, time of day, patient condition, tidal volume, physiologic NO half-life, estimated entrainment fraction, inspired O2 concentration, recent historical dose information, NO oxidation rate, target NO concentration in the lung, patient activity, patient oxygenation, barometric pressure, temperature, patient feedback, physician input, patient respiration rate, patient height, patient ideal body weight, patient current body weight, and patient NO boost request.

10. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein a duration of the pulse of NO is between 50 milliseconds to half the duration of the one or more respiratory events.

11. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to deliver a pulse of a purge gas through a delivery device between one or more detected respiratory events to purge at least one of NO and NO2 from the delivery device.

12. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein a duration of the pulse of NO is targeted at one half the duration of the one or more respiratory events.

13. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein a duration of the pulse of NO is a set unit of time.

14. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein a duration of the pulse of NO is a fraction of a duration of the one or more respiratory events.

15. The NO system of claim 14 , wherein the duration of the pulse of NO has an upper time limit.

16. The NO system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is configured to regulate the amount of nitric oxide generated in the reactant gas using the one or more parameters as input to the controller.
