Abstract

There is provided a system, apparatus and methods for enhancing the illumination of structures of the eye using predetermined scan patterns of an illuminating light beam. The systems, apparatus and methods further provide for obtaining enhanced single images of multiple structures of the eye.

Claims (32)

1. A system for creating a representation of a structure of an eye, the system comprising:

a. a image device comprising an image plane;

b. a memory containing data mapping a relationship between a plurality of points in a three dimensional volume of space and the image plane; wherein the three dimensional volume of space is positioned to contain a structure of the eye;

c. an illumination source for illuminating the structure of the eye in the three dimensional volume of space;

d. a processor; and,

e. the image device, the memory and the processor configured to create an enhanced digital single representation of the structure of the eye.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the relationship is linear.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the relationship is non-linear.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mapping eliminates image distortion; whereby the enhanced digital single representation is a dimensionally accurate.

5. The system of claim 1 or 4 , wherein the structure of the eye is a cornea.

6. The system of claim 1 or 4 , wherein the structure of the eye is a lens.

7. The system of claim 1 or 4 , wherein the illumination source is configured to avoid interference from a pupil of the eye.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination source is a non-coherent light source.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the illumination source comprises a diode.

10. The system of claim 1 or 4 , wherein the image device and the processor are configured to create an enhanced digital single representation of a plurality of structures of the eye.

11. The systems of claim 10 , wherein the structures of the eye comprise two or more of a cornea, a peripheral edge of a cornea, an anterior lens capsule, a posterior lens capsule, and a lens.

12. A system for creating a representation of a structure of an eye, the system comprising:

a. a calibrated image device, comprising an image plane;

b. the calibrated image device configured to create an enhanced digital single representation of a plurality of structures of an eye;

c. a memory containing data mapping a relationship between a plurality of points in a three dimensional volume of space and the image plane of the calibrated image device; wherein the three dimensional volume of space is positioned to contain the structures of the eye;

d. an illumination source for illuminating the structures of the eye in the three dimensional volume of space to provide raw images of the structures of the eye;

e. a processor; and,

f. the calibrated image device, the memory and the processor configured to create an enhanced digital single representation of the structures of an eye from the raw images.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the structures of the eye comprise two or more of a cornea, a peripheral edge of a cornea, an anterior lens capsule, a posterior lens capsule, and a lens.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the enhanced digital single representation is dimensionally accurate.

15. The system of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the system is configured to create the enhanced digital single representation without digital alteration or digital enhancement.

16. The system of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the relationship is linear.

17. The system of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the relationship is non-linear.

18. The system of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the illumination source comprises a diode.

19. The system of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the illumination source comprises a non-coherent light source.

20. The systems of claim 12, 13 or 14 , wherein the illumination source is configured to avoid inference from the pupil.

21. The system of claim 1, 4, 12, or 13 , wherein the image device comprises a digital camera.
