Abstract

A flexographic printing system prints image patterns including one or more uniform image regions on a substrate. A flexographic printing plate includes a pattern of raised features for transferring ink to the substrate in accordance with the image pattern. An anilox roller having a plurality of anilox cells is configured to transfer ink to the flexographic printing plate. Uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate corresponding to the uniform image regions of the image pattern include a pattern of raised feature shapes positioned in a pattern of pseudo-random feature locations. An average spacing between the raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions is less than an anilox cell size such that a plurality of the raised feature shapes receive ink from a single anilox cell of the anilox roller.

Claims (17)

1 . A flexographic printing system for printing image patterns including one or more uniform image regions onto a substrate, comprising:

a flexographic printing plate including a pattern of raised features for transferring ink to the substrate in accordance with the image pattern; and

an anilox roller having a plurality of anilox cells, the anilox cells being indentations in the outer surface of the anilox roller configured to transfer ink to the flexographic printing plate, the anilox cells having an anilox cell size, an anilox cell shape and an anilox cell volume;

wherein uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate corresponding to the uniform image regions of the image pattern include a pattern of raised feature shapes positioned in a pattern of pseudo-random feature locations; and

wherein an average spacing between the raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate is less than the anilox cell size such that a plurality of the raised feature shapes receive ink from a single anilox cell of the anilox roller.

2 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the pattern of raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions are a repeating tile of raised feature shapes in a tiled arrangement.

3 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the pattern of pseudo-random feature positions is a blue-noise pattern.

4 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the anilox cell size is at least two times the average spacing between the raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions.

5 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate have associated feature sizes, and wherein the feature sizes are in the range of 2-20 μm.

6 . The flexographic printing system of claim 5 , wherein the feature sizes are in the range of 4-8 μm.

7 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the pattern of raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate have a specified average depth.

8 . The flexographic printing system of claim 7 , wherein the specified average depth for the pattern of raised feature shapes in the uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate is in the range of 1-20 μm.

9 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the uniform image regions of the flexographic printing plate include associated border regions, and wherein the flexographic printing plate only includes the pattern of raised feature shapes for portions of the uniform image regions that are inside of the border regions.

10 . The flexographic printing system of claim 9 , wherein the flexographic printing plate includes a different pattern of raised feature shapes for the border regions.

11 . The flexographic printing system of claim 9 , wherein the flexographic printing plate includes a solid border in the border regions.

12 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the image pattern is a functional device pattern.

13 . The flexographic printing system of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a web of substrate traveling along a web transport path.
