Abstract

Systems and methods are disclosed that allow a patient to self-treat a medical condition, such as migraine headache and trigeminal neuralgia and the like, by noninvasive electrical stimulation of nerves of the head, particularly supraorbital, supratrochlear, infraorbital, and mental nerves in the vicinity of their foramen or notch. The system comprises a stimulator having one or more electrodes that apply electrical impulses transcutaneously through the patient's skin to the targeted nerve. The stimulator may be coupled to a handheld mobile device, such as a smartphone, for receiving a treatment regimen to treat the medical condition. The system is designed to address problems that arise particularly during self-treatment, when a medical professional is not present.

Claims (26)

1. A system comprising:

a stimulator comprising a signal generator that generates an electrical impulse and an energy source, wherein the stimulator includes a contact surface that contacts an outer skin surface of a head of a patient, wherein the stimulator transmits the electrical impulse transcutaneously through the outer skin surface to a nerve at a target region of the head, wherein the electrical impulse is sufficient to modulate the nerve and modify the medical condition;

wherein the stimulator is configured for wireless coupling to a mobile device; and

a software program downloadable onto the mobile device and configured to instruct the energy source and the signal generator to transmit the electrical impulse to the electrodes and to control a parameter of the electrical impulse, wherein the software program authorizes the stimulator to transmit the electrical impulse.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the medical condition is at least one of a primary headache, a trigeminal neuralgia, a trigeminal neuropathy, a facial pain, or a dental pain.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the nerve comprises a branch of at least one of the trigeminal nerve, a greater occipital nerve, a lesser occipital nerve, or a great auricular nerve of the patient.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone wirelessly coupled to the stimulator.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone having a surface and the stimulator attaches to the surface.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile wireless network device capable of receiving and transmitting data over a network.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the contact surface includes an electrode.

8. The system of claim 7 , further comprising a housing, wherein the signal generator and the energy source are situated within the housing.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the electrical impulse includes bursts of pulses with each of the bursts having a frequency from about 1 burst per second to about 100 bursts per second and each of the pulses having a frequency from about 1 KHz to about 20 KHz.

10. A method for treating a patient with a medical condition, the method comprising:

wirelessly transmitting parameters for one or more electrical signals from a mobile device to a stimulator;

generating the one or more electrical impulses with the stimulator;

contacting an outer surface of a head of a patient with a contact surface of the stimulator;

applying the one or more electrical impulses to the outer surface such that the one or more electrical impulses passes transcutaneously through the outer surface to a nerve within the patient, wherein the one or more electrical impulses is sufficient to modulate the nerve and modify the medical condition; and

downloading a software program onto the mobile device, wherein the software program authorizes the stimulator to apply the one or more electrical impulses.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the medical condition is at least one of a primary headache, a trigeminal neuralgia, a trigeminal neuropathy, a facial pain, or a dental pain.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the nerve comprises a branch of at least one of the trigeminal nerve, a greater occipital nerve, a lesser occipital nerve, or a great auricular nerve of the patient.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more electrical signals comprise authorization for the stimulator to operate.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile phone having a surface and the stimulator attaches to the surface.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the mobile device is a mobile wireless network device capable of receiving and transmitting data over a network.

16. The method of claim 10 , further comprising a signal generator coupled to the energy source, wherein the contact surface includes an electrode, wherein the signal generator generates the electrical impulse that modulates the nerve at the target region.

17. The method of claim 16 , further comprising a housing, wherein the signal generator and the energy source are situated within the housing.

18. The method of claim 10 , wherein the electrical impulse includes bursts of pulses with each of the bursts having a frequency from about 1 burst per second to about 100 bursts per second and each of the pulses having a frequency from about 1 KHz to about 20 KHz.
