Abstract

An information handling system peripheral camera ensures privacy with a cover that minimizes distance of a camera module to a front opening of the camera housing. For instance, opposing cover members rotate about geared ends that engage to translate rotation between the members, where the members meet over a camera opening to block capture of visual images and move to opposing sides to expose the camera module. In an alternative embodiment, a rotating shutter arrangement selectively covers the camera for security and also covers a microphone to provide security against unauthorized audible access through the camera. Selective covering and exposing of a camera module, infrared camera, microphone and user presence detection sensor support adaptive security at a camera based upon end user context.

Claims (47)

1. A camera comprising:

a housing;

a camera module disposed in the housing and operable to capture visual images;

a cover coupled to the housing and having an opening aligned with the camera module;

first and second cover members, each cover member rotationally coupled to the cover with a gear end having a gear, the first and second cover member gears engaged directly with each other; and

an actuator connected to the first cover member to directly rotate the first cover member about the gear end, the rotation translated from the first cover gear directly to the second cover gear, the first and second cover members rotating between a first position exposing the cover opening and a second position blocking the cover opening.

2. The camera of claim 1 wherein the each of the first and second members terminate opposite the gear end with a cover end having a semicircle with a radius of the cover opening.

3. The camera of claim 2 wherein the actuator comprises a motor connected to the first cover member at the gear to rotate the gear.

4. The camera of claim 2 wherein the actuator comprises a piezoelectric device selectively engaging with the first cover member gear.

5. The camera of claim 2 further comprising a manual linkage extending from the first cover member gear to outside the housing and providing a manual interface to actuate rotation of the first cover gear member.

6. The camera of claim 1 wherein the cover has a beveled region that defines movement of the first and second cover members.

7. The camera of claim 6 wherein the beveled region faces towards an interior of the housing and the first and second cover members are disposed between the cover and camera module.

8. The camera of claim 6 wherein the beveled region faces towards an exterior of the housing and the cover is disposed between the camera module and the first and second cover members.

9. The camera of claim 6 wherein the cover has a presence detection opening exposing a presence detection sensor, the presence detection opening outside of the beveled region.

10. A method for covering a camera disposed in a housing, the method comprising:

coupling first and second cover members to a cover disposed over the camera, the cover having an opening through which the camera captures visual images;

engaging gears of the first cover member directly with gears of the second cover member;

connecting the first cover member to an actuator;

rotating the first cover member with the actuator from a position over the cover opening to a position to one side of the cover opening; and

translating the rotating with the gears from the first cover member to the second cover member to rotate the second cover member from a position over the cover opening to a position to a side of the cover opening opposite the first cover member.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

rotating the first cover member from the one side of the cover opening to the position over the cover opening; and

translating the rotating with the gears from the first cover member to the second cover member to rotate the second cover member from the position to the side of the cover opening to the position over the cover opening.

12. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

connecting a step motor to the first cover member; and

moving the first cover member between the position over the cover opening to the position to one side of the cover opening based upon steps of rotation by the step motor.

13. The method of claim 11 further comprising:

connecting a piezoelectric actuator to the first cover member;

interfacing a sensor with the first cover member to detect the first cover member position; and

moving the first cover member between the position over the cover opening to the position to one side of the cover opening based upon first cover member position detected by the sensor.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the sensor comprises a Hall sensor coupled to the cover and a magnet coupled to the first cover member.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising disposing a ferromagnetic material in the second cover member to interact with the magnet and bias the first and second cover members to a closed position when in proximity to each other.

16. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

forming a beveled zone in the cover corresponding to positions of the first and second cover members; and

guiding rotation of the first and second cover members with the beveled zone.

17. A camera comprising:

an aluminum cylinder housing having an open front face;

a camera module coupled within the aluminum cylinder housing at the front face;

a cover disposed over the front face, the cover having an opening aligned with the camera module;

first and second cover members, each having a gear end and a cover end, each cover end sized to cover half the cover opening, each gear end having a gear, the first and second cover members rotationally coupled to the cover at the gear end with the gears directly engaged to translate movement between the first and second cover members; and

an actuator connected to the first cover member and operable to move the first cover member between a position over the opening and to a side of the opening, the first cover member gear directly engaging the second cover member gear to translate movement of the first cover member to the second cover member to rotate the second cover member over the opening and to a side of the opening with the movement of the first cover member.

18. The camera of claim 17 wherein the opening is circular having a radius and each cover end is semicircular having the radius.

19. The camera of claim 18 wherein the cover has a beveled zone that defines a range of motion of the first and second cover members.

20. The camera of claim 17 further comprising:

a user presence sensor exposed through the cover; and

an infrared camera exposed through the cover;

wherein the first and second cover members cover the infrared camera when covering the opening, the user presence sensor exposed when the infrared camera is covered.
