Abstract

A blow mold system including a mold body and a base portion. The mold body includes a central bore extending from a first end of the mold body to a second end of the mold body along a longitudinal axis. The first end is configured to receive a mold preform. The base portion includes a recess, and the base portion is arranged at the second end of the mold body such that the central bore and recess define a blow mold cavity in which a container may be formed from the mold preform. In embodiments, the blow mold system has at least two interchangeable base portions that allow for containers with differently-sized or differently-shaped necks to be formed.

Claims (48)

1. A plastic preform for use in a blow molding system to produce a blow molded plastic squeezable container comprising:

a sidewall;

an interior cavity;

an open end;

a closed end;

a neck located adjacent to the closed end;

wherein the sidewall of the preform comprises:

an upper section having a first thickness;

a middle section having a second thickness, wherein the second thickness is greater than the first thickness;

a transition section between the upper section and the middle section, the transition section having an increasing thickness that provides a transition from the first thickness of the upper section to the second thickness of the middle section; and

an inwardly angled shoulder section between the middle section and the neck.

2. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the neck includes an engagement structure.

3. The preform of claim 2 , wherein the engagement structure includes a plurality of threads.

4. The preform of claim 1 , wherein a diameter of the neck is less than a diameter of the middle section, wherein the inwardly angled shoulder section provides a transition from the greater diameter of the middle section to the smaller diameter of the neck.

5. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall further includes a tapered section between the middle section and the shoulder section.

6. The preform of claim 5 , wherein the inwardly angled shoulder section extends away from a lower end of the tapered section toward a longitudinal axis of the preform.

7. The preform of claim 6 , wherein the middle section includes an inner surface and an outer surface, and wherein the inner surface is substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis and the outer surface is at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis.

8. The preform of claim 7 , wherein the angle between the outer surface of the middle section and the longitudinal axis is between 0.1 and 0.5 degrees.

9. The preform of claim 1 , wherein the preform further includes a handling feature such that the preform may be held or manipulated during processing.

10. The preform of claim 9 , wherein the handling feature includes a rim extending from and generally perpendicular to an outer surface of the upper section.

11. The preform of claim 10 , wherein the handling feature further includes a circumferential recess formed in the outer surface of the upper section.

12. A blow mold system, comprising:

a blow mold body including:

a first end;

a second end; and

a bore extending between the first end and second end of the blow mold body;

a base portion including a recess;

a blow mold preform;

wherein the first end of the mold body is configured to receive the blow mold preform;

wherein the base portion is positioned at the second end of the blow mold body defining at least a portion of a blow mold cavity; and

wherein the blow mold preform is supported by the blow mold body such that an open end of the preform is positioned outside of the blow mold body and a neck of the preform is positioned within the blow mold cavity.

13. The blow mold system of claim 12 , wherein the recess includes a first portion and a second portion, and wherein a cross-sectional area of the first portion is greater than a cross-sectional area of a second portion.

14. The blow mold system of claim 13 , wherein the system further includes a cutting element positioned along a sidewall of the second portion of the recess.

15. The blow mold system of claim 14 , wherein the cutting element is configured to align with an upper edge of a closed end of the mold preform such that the cutting element can create a dispensing opening.

16. A blow mold system for producing containers having differently-sized or differently shaped necks, the system comprising:

a mold body including:

a first end;

a second end; and

a hollow center extending between the first end and second end of the mold body;

at least two separate base portions including:

a first base portion including a first recess having a first size; and

a second base portion including a second recess having a second size;

wherein the first end of the mold body is configured to receive a mold preform; and

wherein one of the at least two base portions is positioned at the second end of the mold body defining a blow mold cavity in which a container may be formed from the mold preform.

17. The blow mold system of claim 16 , wherein the second size is different from the first size.

18. The blow mold system of claim 16 , wherein the first recess includes a first well and a second well and wherein the first well is concentric with the second well.

19. The blow mold system of claim 18 , wherein the first well is positioned at a first depth within the first base portion and the second well is positioned at a second depth within the first base portion.

20. The blow mold system of claim 18 , wherein the first well includes an upper surface positioned at an angle relative to a longitudinal axis of the mold body.
