Abstract

Exemplary embodiments relate to improvements in the design of a messaging inbox. The inbox may display different units or “modules” for providing a user with quick access to different inbox functionalities that they might not otherwise be aware of (or inclined to use on a regular basis). After a number of recent or unread messages are shown in the inbox's initial interface, the messages end and are replaced with modules. Many different types of functionality may be the subject of the modules (e.g., a module for sharing local content such as photos from a photo album, a People/States module, Top Contacts, New Behavior, Live Videos, Events, Businesses, or Messaging Stickers). Once the available modules have been scrolled through, the interface may revert to more messages, such as less-recent or previously read threads from the original messages. Unread threads may also be collapsed in the top section of the inbox, or included in a module.

Claims (61)

1. A method, comprising:

displaying an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox including a plurality of received messages, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first subset of the received messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging application different from message presentation features; and

a collapsible heading, displayed in the first portion of the inbox, the collapsible heading corresponding to a second subset of the received messages comprising all received messages not included in the first subset;

determining a minimum number of messages to be included in the first subset of the received messages; and

in response to determining that a number of messages in the first subset is below the minimum number, moving messages from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset until a number of messages in the first subset equals the minimum number.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a maximum number of messages that can be included in the first subset of the received messages.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining that a total number of unread messages in the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

including the maximum number of unread messages in the first subset of the received messages; and

including a remaining unread messages in the second subset of the received messages.

4. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining that a number of messages in the first subset of the received messages is below the maximum number; and

moving one or more unread messages from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset of the received messages.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

determining that a number of messages in the first subset of the received messages is below the maximum number; and

moving one or more read messages received within a defined recency from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset of the received messages.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein messages included in the first subset includes both individual unread messages and message threads having one or more unread messages therein.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first portion and the second portion are scrollable.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein a user selection of the collapsible heading causes the messaging application to display the second subset of the received messages.

9. A system comprising:

a processor; and

software that, when executed by the processor, cause the system to:

display an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox including a plurality of received messages, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first subset of the received messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging application different from message presentation features; and

a collapsible heading, displayed in the first portion of the inbox, the collapsible heading corresponding to a second subset of the received messages comprising all received messages not included in the first subset;

determine a minimum number of messages to be included in the first subset of the received messages; and

in response to determining that a number of messages in the first subset is below the minimum number, move messages from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset until a number of messages in the first subset equals the minimum number.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine a maximum number of messages that can be included in the first subset of the received messages.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine that a total number of unread messages in the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

include the maximum number of unread messages in the first subset of the received messages; and

include a remaining unread messages in the second subset of the received messages.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine that a number of messages in the first subset of the received messages is below the maximum number; and

move one or more unread messages from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset of the received messages.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine that a number of messages in the first subset of the received messages is below the maximum number; and

move one or more read messages received within a defined recency from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset of the received messages.

14. The system of claim 9 , wherein messages included in the first subset includes both individual unread messages and message threads having one or more unread messages therein.

15. A non-transitory, computer readable medium storing software that, when executed by a processor, cause a system to:

display an inbox for a messaging application on a client device, the inbox including a plurality of received messages, the inbox comprising:

a first portion for displaying a listing of a first subset of the received messages;

a second portion, following the first portion, for displaying a listing of one or more modules providing access to features of the messaging application different from message presentation features; and

a collapsible heading, displayed in the first portion of the inbox, the collapsible heading corresponding to a second subset of the received messages comprising all received messages not included in the first subset;

determine a minimum number of messages to be included in the first subset of the received messages; and

in response to determining that a number of messages in the first subset is below the minimum number, move messages from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset until a number of messages in the first subset equals the minimum number.

16. The non-transitory, computer readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine a maximum number of messages that can be included in the first subset of the received messages.

17. The non-transitory, computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine that a total number of unread messages in the inbox exceeds the maximum number;

include the maximum number of unread messages in the first subset of the received messages; and

include a remaining unread messages in the second subset of the received messages.

18. The non-transitory, computer readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the software further causing the system to:

determine that a number of messages in the first subset of the received messages is below the maximum number; and

move one or more unread messages or read messages received within a defined recency from the second subset of the received messages to the first subset of the received messages.

19. The non-transitory, computer readable medium of claim 15 wherein messages included in the first subset includes both individual unread messages and message threads having one or more unread messages therein.
