Abstract

A diagnostic system that includes a cartridge and a reader. The cartridge can contain a patient sample, such as a blood sample. The cartridge is inserted into the reader and the patient sample is analyzed. The sample can be processed for data collection and analysis to provide interpretative results indicative of a disorder, condition, disease or infection of the patient. For example, the data collection and analysis can determine one or more hemozoin characteristics.

Claims (54)

1. A diagnostic system, comprising:

a processor configured to:

determine a feature of a slope of a data signal that represents a light transmittance value of light transmitted through a sample, the data signal taken over a time measurement from a time when an applied magnetic field is removed from the sample to a time the light transmittance value reaches a randomized sample value; and

determine a condition based on the feature of the slope; and

an output configured to output the condition.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the slope is associated with an amount, size, or shape of a magnetic or paramagnetic component associated with or produced by the condition.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to reduce signal noise of the data signal by baseline wander removal with a signal filter.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine a level of infection based on the feature of the slope.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and the processor is further configured to:

determine a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determine the condition based on the first feature and the second feature of the slope.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and the processor is further configured to:

determine a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determine the condition and a level of infection based on one or both of the first feature and the second feature of the slope.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and the processor is further configured to:

determine a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determine a level of infection based on the second feature of the slope.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the slope is a rising slope.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature is a rate of rise or fall of the slope over the time measurement, and the processor is further configured to determine the condition based on the rate of rise or fall of the slope.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature is an amplitude of the data signal at a time within the time measurement.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature is a length of a signal plateau over a segment of the time measurement.

12. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature is a length of a signal valley over a segment of the time measurement.

13. The system of claim 1 , wherein the feature is a sample feature, and the processor is further configured to determine the condition based on the feature of the slope by:

comparing the sample feature to a known feature of a first condition and a known feature of a second condition; and

determining whether the sample feature is matched with the known feature of the first condition or the known feature of the second condition.

14. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

receive viscosity data about the sample;

compare the viscosity data to a viscosity value;

determine the viscosity data does not meet the viscosity value; and

output an instruction to change the viscosity of the sample before determining the feature of the slope of the data signal.

15. The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine a randomized time based on the feature of the slope and to determine the condition based on the randomized time.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is further configured output the randomized time to the user device.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the randomized time represents a starting light transmittance value or range of values that is measured before the magnetic field is applied to the sample.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the randomized time is a randomized threshold.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the randomized sample value represents a value at which the sample is fully randomized.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the randomized sample value represents a value at which the sample is partially randomized.

21. A method for analyzing a sample, the method comprising:

determining a feature of a slope of a data signal that represents a light transmittance value of light transmitted through a sample, the data signal taken over a time measurement from a time an applied magnetic field if removed from the sample to a time the light transmittance value reaches a randomized value;

determining an condition based on the feature of the slope; and

outputting the condition to a user device.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising determining a level of infection based on the feature of the slope.

23. The method of claim 21 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and further comprising:

determining a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determining the condition based on the first feature and the second feature of the slope.

24. The method of claim 21 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and further comprising:

determining a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determining the condition and a level of infection based on one or both of the first feature and the second feature of the slope.

25. The method of claim 21 , wherein the feature of the slope is a first feature, and further comprising:

determining a second feature of the slope of the data signal; and

determining a level of infection based on the second feature of the slope.

26. The method of claim 21 , wherein the feature is a rate of rise of fall of the slope over the time measurement, and further comprising determining the condition based on the rate of rise or fall of the slope.

27. The method of claim 21 , wherein the feature is a sample feature, and further comprising determining the condition by:

comparing the sample feature to a known feature of a first condition and a known feature of a second condition; and

determining whether the sample feature is matched with the known feature of the condition or the known feature of the second condition.
