Abstract

In one aspect, a method includes determining a content-modification operation channel-change rate for a group of content-presentation devices having a common content-presentation device attribute; comparing the content-modification operation channel-change rate with a baseline channel-change rate; determining that a result of the comparing satisfies a threshold condition; and based on determining that the result of the comparing satisfies the threshold condition, preventing at least one content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices from carrying out a future content-modification operation.

Claims (49)

1. A method comprising:

determining, by a computing system, a content-modification operation channel-change rate between a number of content-modification operations during which one or more content-presentation devices of a group of content-presentation devices change channels and a number of the content-modification operations executed by the group of content-presentation devices, wherein the content-modification operations comprise presenting replacement content segments in place of modifiable content segments;

comparing, by the computing system, the content-modification operation channel-change rate with a baseline channel-change rate; and

in response to determining that a result of the comparing satisfies a threshold condition, preventing, by the computing system, at least one content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices from carrying out a future content-modification operation.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

detecting, by the computing system, a channel-change by a content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices during a content-modification operation; and

based on the detecting, updating the content-modification operation channel-change rate.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the baseline channel-change rate comprises a rate at which the one or more content-presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels while advertisements that are not part of a content-modification operation are presented.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the content-modification operation channel-change rate is a rate at which the one or more content-presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels during the content-modification operations on a given channel, and

the baseline channel-change rate is a baseline channel-change rate for the given channel.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the content-modification operation channel-change rate is a rate at which the one or more content- presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels during the content-modification operations during a given daypart, and

the baseline channel-change rate is a baseline channel-change rate for the given daypart.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the baseline channel-change rate comprises an average content-modification operation channel-change rate for a global set of content-presentation devices that includes the group of content-presentation devices and at least one other group of content-presentation devices.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the group of content-presentation devices have a common content-presentation device attribute that comprises a combination of a model number and a software version.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

a common content-presentation device attribute of the group of content-presentation devices comprises a combination of a model number, a software version, and a content-presentation device setup, and

the content-presentation device setup comprises a model number of another device coupled to the content-presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the result of the comparing satisfies the threshold condition comprises:

determining that the content-modification operation channel-change rate is greater than the baseline channel-change rate by a threshold amount.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising based on the determining that the result of the comparing satisfies the threshold condition, reporting a common content-presentation device attribute of the group of content-presentation devices to a testing module.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising storing, by the computing system, a common content-presentation device attribute of the group of content-presentation devices in a blacklist file,

wherein preventing at least one content-presentation device from carrying out a future content-modification operation comprises:

identifying by the computing system, at least one content-presentation device having the common content-presentation device attribute; and

based on identifying the at least one content-presentation device, preventing, by the computing system, the at least one content-presentation device from carrying out a future content-modification operation.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing system is a content-modification system that provides supplemental content to the group of content-presentation devices for use in content-modification operations.

13. A computing system comprising:

a processor; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, having stored thereon program instructions that, upon execution by the processor, cause performance of a set of operations comprising:

determining a content-modification operation channel-change rate between a number of content-modification operations during which one or more content-presentation devices of a group of content-presentation devices change channels and a number of the content-modification operations executed by the group of content-presentation devices, wherein the content-modification operations comprise presenting replacement content segments in place of modifiable content segments;

comparing the content-modification operation channel-change rate with a baseline channel-change rate; and

in response to determining that a result of the comparing satisfies a threshold condition, preventing at least one content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices from carrying out a future content-modification operation.

14. The computing system of claim 13 , wherein the set of operations further comprises:

detecting, by the computing system, a channel-change by a content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices during a content-modification operation; and

based on the detecting, updating the content-modification operation channel-change rate.

The computing system of claim 13 , wherein the baseline channel-change rate comprises a rate at which the one or more content-presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels while advertisements that are not part of a content-modification operation are presented.

16. The computing system of claim 13 , wherein:

the content-modification operation channel-change rate is a rate at which the one or more content-presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels during the content-modification operations on a given channel, and

the baseline channel-change rate is a baseline channel-change rate for the given channel.

17. The computing system of claim 13 , wherein:

the content-modification operation channel-change rate is a rate at which the one or more content- presentation devices of the group of content-presentation devices change channels during the content-modification operations during a given daypart, and

the baseline channel-change rate is a baseline channel-change rate for the given daypart.

The computing system of claim 13 , wherein the baseline channel-change rate comprises an average content-modification operation channel-change rate for a global set of content-presentation devices that includes the group of content-presentation devices and at least one other group of content-presentation devices.

19. The computing system of claim 13 , wherein the group of content presentation device have a common content-presentation device attribute that comprises a combination of a model number and a software version.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, having stored thereon program instructions that, upon execution by a processor, cause performance of a set of operations comprising:

determining a content-modification operation channel-change rate between a number of content-modification operations during which one or more content-presentation devices of a group of content-presentation devices change channels and a number of the content-modification operations executed by the group of content-presentation devices, wherein the content-modification operations comprise presenting replacement content segments in place of modifiable content segments;

comparing the content-modification operation channel-change rate with a baseline channel-change rate; and

based on determining that the result of the comparing satisfies a threshold condition, preventing at least one content-presentation device of the group of content-presentation devices from carrying out a future content-modification operation.
