Abstract

A user device receives a first media item that is associated with a second media item. The device determines that a playback state for the device indicates that the device is paired with an alternative playback device. The device sends the playback state in a request for the second media item, receives the second media item in a first format for playback on the user device and in a second format for playback on the alternative playback device. The device determines whether the playback state of the device is the same. The device displays a first graphical representation of the second media item in the first format on the user device if the user device is no longer paired with the alternative playback device and displays a second graphical representation of the second media item in the second format on the user device if the user device is still paired with the alternative playback device.

Claims (57)

1. A system, comprising:

one or more servers configured to:

receive, from a first device remote from the one or more servers, a request for a media item;

identify, from the request, a display device paired with the first device;

determine, based on a playback state, that the display device paired to the first device is configured to play the media item;

select a candidate media item from a set of candidate media items that is compatible with the display device;

generate a tracking identifier based on a session identifier that is associated with the request; and

transmit, to the first device or the display device, a data package comprising (i) the candidate media item in a format that is compatible for playback on the display device paired with the first device and (ii) the tracking identifier.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the candidate media item comprises video.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the candidate media item comprises an image.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the candidate media item comprises audio.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to determine, based on the playback state, the candidate media item is not compatible with the first device.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to:

identify a subset of the set of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device; and

select the candidate media item from the subset of the set of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device, wherein the candidate media item comprises a digital image.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to:

determine a first subset of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device;

determine a second subset of candidate media items that are not compatible for playback on the display device; and

select, responsive to the determination that the first subset is compatible with the display device and the second subset of candidate media items is not compatible with the display device, the candidate media item from the first subset of candidate media items.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to:

determine a first subset of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device based one the playback state of the display device;

determine a second subset of candidate media items that are not compatible for playback on the display device based on the playback state of the display device; and

select, responsive to the determination that the first subset is compatible with the display device and the second subset of candidate media items is not compatible with the display device, the candidate media item from the first subset of candidate media items.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to:

add the tracking identifier to a universal resource identifier for the candidate media item; and

generate the data package comprising the universal resource identifier with the tracking identifier.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more servers are further configured to:

determine a ranking for each of the set of candidate media items; and

select the candidate media item from the set of candidate media items further based on the ranking.

11. A method, comprising:

receiving, by one or more servers, from a first device remote from the one or more servers, a request for a media item;

identifying, by the one or more servers, from the request, a display device paired with the first device;

determining, by the one or more servers, based on a playback state, that the display device paired to the first device is configured to play the media item;

selecting, by the one or more servers, a candidate media item from a set of candidate media items that is compatible with the display device;

generating, by the one or more servers, a tracking identifier based on a session identifier that is associated with the request; and

transmitting, by the one or more servers, to the first device or the display device, a data package comprising (i) the candidate media item in a format that is compatible for playback on the display device paired with the first device and (ii) the tracking identifier.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the candidate media item comprises video.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the candidate media item comprises an image.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the candidate media item comprises audio.

15. The method of claim 11 , further comprising determining, by the one or more servers, based on the playback state, that the candidate media item is not compatible with the first device.

16. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

identifying, by the one or more servers, a subset of the set of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device; and

selecting, by the one or more servers, the candidate media item from the subset of the set of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device, wherein the candidate media item comprises a digital image.

17. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining, by the one or more servers, a first subset of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device;

determining, by the one or more servers, a second subset of candidate media items that are not compatible for playback on the display device; and

selecting, by the one or more servers, responsive to the determination that the first subset is compatible with the display device and the second subset of candidate media items is not compatible with the display device, the candidate media item from the first subset of candidate media items.

18. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining, by the one or more servers, a first subset of candidate media items that are compatible for playback on the display device based one the playback state of the display device;

determining, by the one or more servers, a second subset of candidate media items that are not compatible for playback on the display device based on the playback state of the display device; and

selecting, by the one or more servers, responsive to the determination that the first subset is compatible with the display device and the second subset of candidate media items is not compatible with the display device, the candidate media item from the first subset of candidate media items.

19. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

adding, by the one or more servers, the tracking identifier to a universal resource identifier for the candidate media item; and

generating, by the one or more servers, the data package comprising the universal resource identifier with the tracking identifier.

20. The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

determining, by the one or more servers, a ranking for each of the set of candidate media items; and

selecting, by the one or more servers, the candidate media item from the set of candidate media items further based on the ranking.
