Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to an XR messaging system that can conduct a message thread between multiple users, where individual messages can be designated for delivery to particular artificial reality locations or devices. When sending a message, a user can choose to send the message to a particular destination associated with one or more other users on the message thread. When such a destination selection is made, the message can be formatted for viewing at the selected destination by applying a template, to the message, selected based on the template being configured for the types of data defined in the message and for the type of the destination.

Claims (58)

1. A method for conducting, in an artificial reality (XR) environment, a message thread between multiple users where messages of the message thread are designated for delivery to particular XR locations defined in the XR environment, the method comprising:

sending, by a sending user's device, the particular message to first and second ones of the XR locations, the sending step comprising:

receiving content for a particular message, the content having one or more content types;

a selection receiving step comprising:

receiving a first selection of the first XR location as a first destination for the particular message, the first destination being of a first type having a first format for outputting content, wherein the first selection of the first XR location is based on the sending user having sending permissions for the first XR location, and wherein the particular message is automatically formatted in the first format with a first template automatically selected for the particular message according to the one or more content types of the content for the particular message and the first type of the first destination; and

receiving a second selection of the second XR location as a second destination for the particular message, the second destination being of a second type having a second format for outputting content, the second format being different from the first format, wherein the second selection of the second XR location is based on the sending user having sending permissions for the second XR location, and wherein the particular message is automatically formatted in the second format with a second template automatically selected for the particular message according to the one or more content types of the content for the particular message and the second type of the second destination; and

after the selection receiving step, a delivery step comprising:

causing the particular message, as formatted with the first template, to be delivered to the first selected XR location; and

causing the particular message, as formatted with the second template, to be delivered to the second selected XR location.

2. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the respective type of each destination defines the respective location as an XR location with a sub-type specifying at least one of: a horizontal surface, a vertical surface, an object, or a 3D volume; and

wherein the selection of the respective template for the particular message is based on the respective sub-type.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of each respective XR location is a selection from among a list including: a XR location, and at least one device associated with a recipient of the particular message.

4. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein each respective XR location is defined with viewing permissions specifying that one or more users, other than the recipient designated for the particular message, can view content in the respective XR location; and

wherein at least part of the content for the particular message is viewable by the one or more users when the one or more users are viewing the respective XR location via an XR device.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the causing the particular message to be delivered to the recipient at the respective selected XR location includes sending the particular message via a messaging platform that adds the particular message to the message thread.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the selection of the respective template for formatting the particular message is further based on customizations from the sending user; and/or

the formatting of the particular message using the respective template is based on parameters for the respective template specified by the sending user.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein A) the selection of the respective template and/or B) the formatting the particular message based on the respective template, is further based on preferences set by the recipient at the respective XR location.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the selection of each respective XR location as a destination is one of multiple destination selections, wherein a different template is selected for an other of the multiple destinations, different than the respective XR location, based on the other destination having a different destination type.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the particular message to be delivered to the recipient at the respective selected XR location destination includes causing a notification of the particular message to be displayed in relation to the respective selected XR location.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the receiving the first selection of the first XR location is in response to the sending user not specifying a destination and the first XR location being specified as a default destination.

11. A computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by a computing system, cause the computing system to perform a process for conducting, in an artificial reality (XR) environment, a message thread between multiple users where messages of the message thread are designated for delivery to particular XR locations defined in the XR environment, the process comprising:

sending, by a sending user's device, the particular message to first and second ones of the XR locations, the sending step comprising:

receiving content for a particular message, the content having one or more content types;

a selection receiving step comprising:

receiving a first selection of the first XR location as a first destination for the particular message, the first destination being of a first type having a first format for outputting content, wherein the first selection of the first XR location is based on the sending user having sending permissions for the first XR location, and wherein the particular message is automatically formatted in the first format with a first template automatically selected for the particular message according to the one or more content types of the content for the particular message and the first type of the first destination; and

receiving a second selection of the second XR location as a second destination for the particular message, the second destination being of a second type having a second format for outputting content, the second format being different from the first format, wherein the particular message is automatically formatted in the second format with a second template automatically selected for the particular message according to the one or more content types of the content for the particular message and the second type of the second destination; and

after the selection receiving step, a delivery step comprising:

causing the particular message, as formatted with the first template, to be delivered to the first selected XR location; and

causing the particular message, as formatted with the second template, to be delivered to the second selected XR location.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 ,

wherein the respective type of each destination defines the respective location as an XR location with a sub-type specifying at least one of: a horizontal surface, a vertical surface, an object, or a 3D volume; and

wherein the selection of the respective template for the particular message is based on the sub-type.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 , wherein the selection of each respective XR location is a selection from among a list including: a XR location, and at least one device associated with a recipient of the particular message.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 11 ,

wherein each respective XR location is defined with viewing permissions specifying that one or more users, other than the recipient designated for the particular message, can view content in the XR location; and
