TIME DIVISION DUPLEX (TDD) NETWORK PROTECTION REPEATER
A technology is described for a time division duplex (TDD) repeater with network protection. The TDD repeater can comprise a first port, a second port, and one or more amplification paths coupled between the first port and the second port. The TDD repeater can comprise a signal detector configured to measure a received signal power for a downlink (DL) signal in a first set of one or more TDD DL subframes. The TDD repeater can be further configured to adjust an uplink (UL) noise power or gain of the one or more amplification paths based on the received signal power for the DL signal in the first set of the one or more TDD DL subframes.
1 . A time division duplex (TDD) repeater comprising:
a first port;
a second port;
one or more amplification paths coupled between the first port and the second port; and
a signal detector configured to measure a received signal power for a downlink (DL) signal in a first set of one or more TDD DL subframes, and
wherein the repeater is configured to adjust a system uplink (UL) noise power or gain of the one or more amplification paths based on the received signal power for the DL signal in the first set of the one or more TDD DL subframes.
2 . The TDD repeater of claim 1 , wherein the UL gain or noise power is adjusted based on a weighted average of the received signal power for the DL signal in the first set of the one or more TDD DL subframes.
3 . The TDD repeater of claim 1 , wherein the received signal power is a composite received signal strength indication (RSSI) spanning an amplified repeater bandwidth.
4 . The TDD repeater of claim 1 , further comprising an UL antenna and a DL antenna, wherein the UL antenna and the DL antenna are directed in different directions.
5 . The TDD repeater of claim 1 , wherein the repeater is further configured to adjust a UL gain or noise power of the one or more amplification paths based on the received signal power for the DL signal in the first set of the one or more TDD DL subframes.
6 . The TDD repeater of claim 1 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
measure the received signal power for the DL signal in a first set of one or more TDD DL subframes in a selected direction; and
adjust the UL gain or noise power for the selected direction based on the received signal power for the DL signal in the selected direction.
7 . A time division duplex (TDD) repeater configured to:
measure a control channel transmit power from a base station; and
adjust an UL gain or noise power based on the control channel transmit power.
8 . The TDD repeater of claim 7 , further comprising:
a controller configured to identify a maximum number of adjacent DL subframes in one or more frames of a TDD signal containing the control channel based on a TDD uplink (UL)/downlink (DL) frame configuration of the TDD signal;
measure the control channel transmit power during the maximum number of adjacent DL subframes; and
adjust the UL gain or noise power based on the control channel transmit power measured during the maximum number of adjacent DL subframes.

64 . A repeater operable for network protection, wherein the repeater is configured to:
receive a control signal for a first-direction signal in a first frequency band; and
send a power level indicator for the first-direction signal in the first frequency band to a repeater; and
wherein the repeater comprises:
a first port;
a second port; and
one or more amplification paths coupled between the first port and the second port, and
wherein the repeater is configured to:
receive a power level indicator for the first-direction signal in the first frequency band; and
calculate an allowable gain or noise power level from the power level indicator for the first-direction or second-direction signal in the first frequency band.
65 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
sweep the first frequency band for one or more signals;
determine a proximity for each of the one or more signals;
identify, from the one or more signals, a lowest-proximity or strongest signal, wherein the lowest-proximity or strongest signal has a lowest proximity from the repeater; and
calculate the gain or noise power level from the power level indicator for the lowest-proximity or strongest signal.
66 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to receive the power level indicator from a modem.
67 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the control signal is received by the modem from a user equipment (UE) or a node.
68 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
estimate a path loss from the repeater to a node based on the power level indicator.
69 . The repeater of claim 68 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
identify a type of the node and a distance between the repeater and the node based on the path loss from the repeater to the node; and
adjust the repeater's network protection gain level or a noise power level based on the type of node and the distance between the repeater and the node.
70 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the power level indicator includes one or more of:
an uplink (UL) requested power, or
an UL transmitted power, or
a downlink (DL) received signal strength indicator (RSSI) or RSRP or channel quality indicator (CQI).
71 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to adjust an overload gain reduction level or a noise power gain reduction level based on a location of the repeater and a location of a base station.
72 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
measure a control channel transmit power from the base station; and
estimate a base station coupling loss (BSCL) from the control channel transmit power.
73 . The repeater of claim 64 , wherein the repeater is further configured to:
receive a base station requested transmit power from a user equipment (UE); and
adjust the UL gain based on the base station requested transmit power.
74 . The repeater as in claim 68 , wherein the node is a base station, a small cell, or a relay node.
