Abstract

This disclosure describes methods, apparatus, and systems related to media access control (MAC) range extension. A device may cause to append a training field to each of one or more beacon frames. The device may cause to send the one or more beacon frames directionally using a sector sweep to one or more responder devices during a first interval. The device may determine an extended schedule element to be sent to the one or more responder devices, the extended schedule element including one or more directional antenna sectors to be used by the device during a second interval. The device may identify a first frame from a first responder device, during the second interval, wherein the first frame is received on a directional antenna sector of the one or more directional antenna sectors corresponding to an operating sector of the first responder device.

associate a second antenna sector with the second beacon frame, wherein the second antenna sector is associated with a second direction;

modify the first extended schedule element by adding one or more fields to include a first indication of the first antenna sector, wherein the first indication indicates to a first responder device of one or more responder devices that a first time period during a data transmission interval (DTI) of a beacon interval is allocated for the first antenna sector to perform beamforming training;

modify the second extended schedule element by adding one or more fields to include a second indication of the second antenna sector, wherein the second indication indicates to the first responder device that a second time period during the DTI is allocated for the second antenna sector to perform beamforming training, the DTI following an association beamforming training (A-BFT) period of the beacon interval;

transmit the plurality of beacon frames to the one or more responder devices; and

identify a frame in response to the plurality of beacon frames received from the first responder device using the first antenna sector during the first time period, the frame associated with the beamforming training.

3. The access point apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

transmit a feedback frame to the first responder device in response to the frame, the feedback frame associated with the beamforming training.

4. The access point apparatus of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of beacon frames comprises an appended training field.

5. The access point apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to identify a second frame received from a second responder device of the one or more responder devices, wherein the second frame is received on the second antenna sector during the second time.

6. The access point apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first time period comprises at least one of a contention based period or a scheduled service period.

7. The access point apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a transceiver configured to transmit and receive wireless signals comprising the plurality of beacon frames.

8. The access point apparatus of claim 7 , further comprising an antenna coupled to the transceiver.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing computer-executable instructions which when executed by one or more processors result in performing operations comprising:

generating a plurality of beacon frames comprising a first beacon frame and a second beacon frame, wherein the first beacon frame comprises a first extended schedule element and the second beacon frame comprises a second extended schedule element;

associating a first antenna sector with the first beacon frame, wherein the first antenna sector is associated with a first direction;

modifying the second extended schedule element by adding one or more fields to include a second indication of the second antenna sector, wherein the second indication indicates to the first responder device that a second time period during the DTI is allocated for the second antenna sector to perform beamforming training, the DTI following an association beamforming training (A-BFT) period of the beacon interval;

transmitting the plurality of beacon frames to the one or more responder devices; and

identifying a frame in response to the plurality of beacon frames received from the first responder device using the first antenna sector during the first time period, the frame associated with the beamforming training.
