Abstract

A method and system for determining concentricity of a multiple layer golf ball are disclosed herein. One or more images of a golf ball are generated using an X-ray source, a camera or a digital detector, and an image intensifier. An edge detection algorithm is preferably utilized. The method also includes calculating Y,Z center coordinates of the a best fit diameter or ellipse of the inner edge layer and outer edge layer of the multiple layer golf ball.

Claims (12)

1. A method for analyzing a multiple layer golf ball, the method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of X-ray images of the golf ball at a X-ray scanning apparatus comprising an X-ray source and a detector;

generating, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, a plurality of radial rays emanating outward from a center of the golf ball;

plotting, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, a pixel value of each of the plurality of radial rays; and

analyzing, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, a plotted pixel value of each of the plurality of radial rays.

2. The method according to claim 1 further comprising determining, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, changes in the plotted pixel values of each of the plurality of radial rays to detect an edge of a layer of the golf ball.

3. The method according to claim 1 further comprising determining, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, if a core layer thickness is uneven based on a magnitude of a sinusoidal pattern.

4. The method according to claim 1 further comprising:

calculating, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, a circle outside of a cover layer of the golf ball;

decreasing, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, diameters of subsequent circles; and

determining, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, an outer edge of the cover layer of the golf ball.

5. The method according to claim 1 further comprising utilizing, at the X-ray scanning apparatus, moving averages plotted pixel value of each of the plurality of radial rays to determine outer edges and inner edges of layers of the golf ball.
