Abstract

An electronic gaming machine includes a processor configured to control a display device to display a plurality of columns of symbol positions, where each column of symbol positions includes a plurality of symbols selected from an associated reel strip of a plurality of reel strips. The processor is also configured to select the symbols for each column, and control the display device to simulate stopping the first reel strip prior to controlling the display device to simulate stopping the second reel strip, whereby a sub-category of prize associated with a prize sub-category symbol is indicated to a player of the electronic gaming machine prior to indicating a category of prize associated with a prize category symbol. The processor is also configured to determine whether a first column includes the prize sub-category symbol as well as whether a second column includes the prize category symbol. If the prize sub-category and prize category symbols are included, the processor is also configured to provide an award.

Claims (60)

1. An electronic gaming system comprising:

a display device;

a memory; and

a processor configured to execute instructions stored in the memory, which when executed, cause the processor to:

control the display device to display a prize sub-category symbol at a first reel strip of a plurality of reel strips;

control the display device to display a background at a second reel strip of the plurality of reel strips, wherein display of the background at the second reel strip indicates that a prize category symbol will be displayed at the second reel strip;

control the display device to display the prize category symbol at the second reel strip; and

in response to the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol being displayed, present an output based upon a combination of the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol.

2. The electronic gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

control the display device to simulate spinning and stopping of a name area at the second reel strip; and

control the display device to display the prize category symbol at the name area at the second reel strip.

3. The electronic gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

control the display device to simulate spinning the plurality of reel strips;

control the display device to simulate stopping the first reel strip; and

control the display device to simulate stopping the second reel strip.

4. The electronic gaming system of claim 3 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

determine, based at least in part upon a random number generator (RNG) output from an RNG, a stop position of each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips; and

control the display device to simulate stopping of each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips at the stop position determined based at least in part upon the RNG output.

5. The electronic gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

only in response to at least one of: i) determining that the first reel strip excludes the prize sub-category symbol, or ii) determining that the second reel strip excludes the prize category symbol, evaluate a plurality of symbols included in each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips to determine whether to provide a different award.

6. The electronic gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to:

identify, from a customized paytable, a prize associated with the combination of the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol, wherein the customized paytable associates a distinct prize from a plurality of prizes with each combination of a plurality of combinations of prize sub-category symbols and prize category symbols.

7. The electronic gaming system of claim 1 , wherein the prize category symbol is selected from a plurality of prize category symbols, wherein at least one prize category symbol of the plurality of prize category symbols is associated with at least one prize that is incrementally increased during gameplay, and wherein at least one other prize category symbol of the plurality of prize category symbols is associated with at least one other prize that is fixed during gameplay.

8. A non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by a processor, cause the processor to:

control a display device to display a prize sub-category symbol at a first reel strip of a plurality of reel strips;

control the display device to display a background at a second reel strip of the plurality of reel strips, wherein display of the background at the second reel strip indicates that a prize category symbol will be displayed at the second reel strip;

control the display device to display the prize category symbol at the second reel strip; and

in response to the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol being displayed, present an output based upon a combination of the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol.

9. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

control the display device to simulate spinning of a name area at the second reel strip; and

control the display device to display the prize category symbol at the name area at the second reel strip.

10. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

control the first reel strip to stop; and

control the second reel strip to be stopped after all other reel strips of the plurality of reel strips are stopped.

11. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

determine, based at least in part upon a random number generator (RNG) output from an RNG, a stop position each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips; and

control each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips to stop at the stop position determined based at least in part upon the RNG output.

12. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, further cause the processor to:

only in response to at least one of: i) determining that the first reel strip does not display the prize sub-category symbol, or ii) determining that the second reel strip does not display the prize category symbol, evaluate a plurality of symbols displayed at the plurality of reel strips to determine whether to provide a different award.

13. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the processor to:

identify, from a paytable, a prize associated with the combination of the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol, wherein the paytable associates a distinct prize from a plurality of prizes with each combination of a plurality of combinations of prize sub-category symbols and prize category symbols.

14. The non-transitory, computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the prize category symbol is selected from a plurality of prize category symbols, wherein at least one prize category symbol of the plurality of prize category symbols is associated with at least one prize that is incrementally increased during gameplay, and wherein at least one other prize category symbol of the plurality of prize category symbols is associated with at least one other prize that is fixed during gameplay.

15. A method comprising:

controlling, by a processor, a display device to display a prize sub-category symbol at a first reel strip of a plurality of reel strips;

controlling, by the processor, the display device to display a background at a second reel strip of the plurality of reel strips, wherein display of the background at the second reel strip indicates that a prize category symbol will be displayed at the second reel strip;

controlling, by the processor, the display device to display the prize category symbol at the second reel strip; and

in response to the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol being displayed, causing, by the processor, presentation of an output based upon a combination of the prize sub-category symbol and the prize category symbol.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

controlling, by the processor, the display device to simulate spinning of a name area at the second reel strip; and

controlling, by the processor, the display device to display the prize category symbol at the name area at the second reel strip.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

controlling, by the processor, the display device to simulate spinning the plurality of reel strips;

controlling, by the processor, the display device to simulate stopping the first reel strip; and

controlling, by the processor, the display device to simulate stopping the second reel strip.

18. The method of claim 17 , further comprising:

determining, by the processor and based at least in part upon a random number generator (RNG) output from an RNG, a stop position of each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips; and

controlling, by the processor, the display device to simulate stopping of each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips at the stop position determined based at least in part upon the RNG output.

19. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

only in response to at least one of: i) determining that the first reel strip excludes the prize sub-category symbol, or ii) determining that the second reel strip excludes the prize category symbol, evaluate a plurality of symbols included in each reel strip of the plurality of reel strips to determine whether to provide a different award.
