Abstract

Apparatus for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in a user, the apparatus comprising: a stimulator for electrically stimulating at least one nerve with at least one stimulation pulse; a controller connected to the stimulator for controlling at least one characteristic of the at least one stimulation pulse; an analyzer for identifying the current and future presence of pain-altering patterns based on weather and/or environmental factors; and a processor connected to the analyzer and the controller for modulating the at least one characteristic of the at least one stimulation pulse according to the pain-altering patterns identified by the analyzer.

Claims (42)

1. Apparatus for delivering transcutaneous electrical stimulation to a user, the apparatus comprising:

a stimulator for electrically stimulating at least one part of the user body;

a controller connected to said stimulator for controlling at least one characteristic of the stimulation delivered by the stimulator; and

an analyzer for identifying the presence of a pattern, wherein the pattern is based on at least one weather condition or environmental factor, wherein the at least one weather condition or environmental factor is provided by a weather service provider;

wherein the controller uses the pattern identified by said analyzer to automatically modify at least one characteristic of the stimulation.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said stimulator stimulates the user with at least one stimulation pulse.

3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic of the stimulation comprises at least one from the group consisting of stimulation pulse amplitude; stimulation pulse width; total charge of the stimulation pulse; frequency at which stimulation pulses are generated.

4. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic of the stimulation comprises the duration of a therapy session during which stimulation pulses are generated.

5. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic of the stimulation comprises the time between two consecutive therapy sessions.

6. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the weather and/or environmental factors comprise at least one selected from the group consisting of: past weather and/or environmental conditions, current weather and/or environmental conditions, and predicted future weather and/or environmental conditions.

7. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the weather and/or environmental factors comprise at least one selected from the group consisting of: temperature, precipitation, humidity, barometric pressure, and wind speed.

8. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the pattern causes onset of pain perceived by the user.

9. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the pattern causes a change of pain experienced by the user.

10. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the pattern includes at least one selected from the group consisting of: a temperature below a temperature threshold, a humidity above a humidity threshold, a wind speed exceeding a wind speed threshold, a precipitation amount exceeding a precipitation amount threshold, and a barometric pressure below a barometric pressure threshold.

11. Apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the value of at least one of the temperature threshold, humidity threshold, wind speed threshold, precipitation amount threshold and barometric pressure threshold depends on at least one selected from the group consisting of: demographic information of the user and a health condition of the user.

12. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the health condition of the user comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of: pain history, pain location, pain duration, pain frequency, pain pattern, and weather sensitivity.

13. Apparatus according to claim 11 wherein the demographic information of the user comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of: age, gender, height, and weight.

14. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the pattern includes the rate of change of at least one of the weather and/or environmental factors exceeding a pre-determined threshold.

15. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller modifies the at least one characteristic of the stimulation concurrently with the presence of the pattern based on weather and/or environmental factors.

16. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller modifies the at least one characteristic of the stimulation prior to the presence of the pattern based on weather and/or environmental factors.

17. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller modifies the at least one characteristic of the stimulation for a fixed time period.

18. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said controller modulates the at least one characteristic of the stimulation for the same duration as the patterns based on weather and/or environmental factors.

19. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising:

at least one sensor for measuring weather and/or environmental factors;

wherein said at least one sensor is connected to said analyzer, and further wherein the pattern is determined based on weather and/or environmental factors measured by the at least one sensor.

20. Apparatus according to claim 19 wherein said at least one sensor comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of: a temperature sensor, a humidity sensor, and a barometric pressure sensor.

21. Apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the pattern includes at least one selected from the group consisting of: a temperature below a temperature threshold, a humidity above a humidity threshold, and a barometric pressure below a barometric pressure threshold.

22. Apparatus according to claim 21 wherein the value of at least one of the temperature threshold, the humidity threshold, and the barometric pressure threshold depends on at least one selected from the group consisting of: demographic information of the user and a health condition of the user.

23. Apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the pattern includes the rate of change of at least one of the weather and/or environmental factors exceeding a pre-determined threshold.

24. Apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising:

a monitor for measuring the activity level of the user;

wherein the monitor is connected to said controller, and further wherein said controller modifies the at least one characteristic of the stimulation according to the pattern identified by said analyzer and the activity level measured by said monitor.

25. Apparatus for delivering transcutaneous electrical stimulation to a user, the apparatus comprising:

a stimulator for electrically stimulating at least one part of the user body;

a controller connected to said stimulator for controlling at least one characteristic of the stimulation delivered by the stimulator; and

an analyzer for identifying the presence of a pattern, wherein the pattern is based on at least one weather condition or environmental factor, wherein the at least one weather condition or environmental factor comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of: past weather and/or environmental conditions, current weather and/or environmental conditions, and predicted future weather and/or environmental conditions;
