Abstract

A method of calibrating a TDR measurement comprising determining an echo profile of a calibration trace, and comparing a determined length of an actual physical length taking into account dimensional variables due to temperature fluctuations, then deriving and storing a calibration factor, and using that calibration factor to determine a system clock distance calibration, with the calibration factor being a ratio of the clock cycles to ensure that the determined electronic length is equal to the actual physical length. Once the system clock has been calibrated, measurement of the distance along the probe to the liquid height, plunger height, and so on, can then be determined with very high accuracy, using very low-cost electronic components.

Claims (15)

1. A method of calibrating a TDR measurement system comprising a housing, an elongate measurement probe having coaxially located inner and outer electrodes, and an electronics assembly in said housing for transmitting a signal along the elongate measurement probe and for receiving at least a return echo upon encountering a change in impedance with respect to the inner and outer electrodes to thereby determine the position of a medium located in an inner space between the inner and outer electrodes, the method comprising:

a) applying a signal to an embedded calibration trace embedded in a printed circuit board (PCB) of the electronics assembly of the TDR measurement system, the embedded calibration trace being of a predetermined length;

b) measuring the length of the embedded calibration trace using the TDR measurement system;

c) comparing the measured length of the embedded calibration trace to the predetermined length;

d) adjusting the TDR measurement system's clock so that the measured length is corrected to the predetermined length;

e) maintaining the TDR measurement system's adjusted clock.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising repeating steps a) through e) in response to detection of a change in temperature in excess of a predetermined threshold.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

a) applying a signal to the embedded calibration trace of predetermined length and having a predetermined echo profile stored in the TDR measurement system;

b) measuring a temperature of the TDR measurement system;

c) determining a length of the calibration trace based on the measured temperature using the TDR measurement system;

d) comparing the determined length of the trace based on the measured temperate with the predetermined length of the embedded calibration trace;

e) deriving a calibration factor based on the comparison;

f) using the calibration factor to adjust a system clock distance calibration for application to subsequent probe measurements using the TDR measurement system;

g) maintaining the TDR measurement system's adjusted clock.
