Abstract

Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) including with a lamellar phase having Janus nanoparticles, petroleum surfactant, crude oil, and water and with additional water to give the flooding fluid that may be pumped through a wellbore into a subterranean formation to affect a property of hydrocarbon in the subterranean formation via contact of the flooding fluid with the hydrocarbon.

Claims (14)

1. A method of enhanced oil recovery (EOR), comprising:

combining a liquid-crystal lamellar phase with water to give a flooding fluid, wherein the liquid-crystal lamellar phase comprises a petroleum surfactant, crude oil layers, and water layers, wherein the liquid-crystal lamellar phase comprises Janus metal-oxide nanoparticles formed at interfaces of the crude oil layers with the water layers, and wherein the Janus metal-oxide nanoparticles have a hydrophilic side and a hydrophobic side; and

pumping, via a centrifugal pump, the flooding fluid through a wellbore into a subterranean formation, thereby flooding the subterranean formation with the flooding fluid.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the water combined with the liquid-crystal lamellar phase is fresh water, seawater, or brine, and wherein the petroleum surfactant comprises a petroleum sulfonate surfactant.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the petroleum surfactant comprises a zwitterionic surfactant, and wherein the Janus metal-oxide nanoparticles formed at the interfaces comprise the Janus metal-oxide nanoparticles formed by reacting chemical precursors in the lamellar phase, the chemical precursors as chemical reagents comprising a hydrophilic chemical precursor and a hydrophobic chemical precursor.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the petroleum surfactant comprises cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine (CAHS) or cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), or a combination thereof.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the petroleum surfactant comprises a zwitterionic surfactant, and wherein the Janus metal-oxide nanoparticles comprise Janus silicon-oxide (SiO2) nanoparticles.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the flooding comprises nanofluid flooding because of the Janus nanoparticles in the flooding fluid, and wherein the flooding comprises surfactant flooding because of the petroleum surfactant in the flooding fluid.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the Janus nanoparticles adsorb onto crude oil-water interfaces in the subterranean formation.

8. The method of claim 7 , comprising producing hydrocarbon and the flooding fluid from the subterranean formation through another wellbore to an Earth surface.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the wellbore comprises casing, and wherein pumping the flooding fluid comprises pumping the flooding fluid through perforations in the casing into the subterranean formation.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising preparing the lamellar phase, wherein preparing the lamellar phase comprises:

forming in a vessel the lamellar phase comprising water layers, crude oil layers, and the petroleum surfactant; and

reacting chemical precursors in the lamellar phase in the vessel to form the Janus nanoparticles at interfaces of the water layers with the crude oil layers.
