Abstract

In one example, a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) endpoint device such as a smart phone or other CPU device interfaces with a data communications server which provides VoIP services to a plurality of VoIP-capable endpoint devices. The VoIP endpoint device includes at least one computer processor circuit and memory circuit that are configured to obtain current geolocation data. The VoIP endpoint device retrieves previously-reported geolocation data from the memory circuit and determines, based upon the previously-reported geolocation data and the current geolocation data, that a mismatch trigger event has occurred. The VoIP endpoint device sends, in response to the determining, the current geolocation data from the particular endpoint device to the VoIP server. The current geolocation data is stored in the memory circuit.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the previous geolocation data corresponds to previously-reported geolocation data, to programmed geographic-specific data, or to map data corresponding to one or more limited geographic regions.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data falling outside of a particular radius from a second geographic location.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data being in a new municipality relative to a second geographic location indicated by the previous geolocation data.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data being in a new municipality relative to a second geographic location, the method further comprising determining, based upon the comparison, that the first geographic location is within a different country than the second geographic location.

6. The method of claim 1 , further including obtaining, via the particular endpoint device, the current geolocation data from global positioning system (GPS) circuitry.

7. The method of claim 1 , further including selecting, in response to said validating a certain source, one of the plurality of servers for providing data-communication services to the particular endpoint device based on a location of the selected one of the plurality of servers and on the current geolocation data of the particular endpoint device.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the particular endpoint device includes a software application configured to permit the particular endpoint device to communicate with the computer processing circuitry via one or more of the plurality of servers and to store data, corresponding to at least one of the previous geolocation data and the current geolocation data, in memory circuitry of the particular endpoint device.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mismatch trigger event is in response to a determination that the particular endpoint device is being registered to a different VoIP server relative to a previously-reported VoIP server.

10. For use with a plurality of servers (“the servers”) to be collectively functioning as a single unified server, wherein the servers are to provide a plurality of data communication services including Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and call routing services in one or more limited geographic regions to a plurality of VoIP-capable endpoint devices, an apparatus comprising:

processing circuitry, communicatively coupled to or integrated with a particular endpoint device of the plurality of VoIP-capable endpoint devices, to determine that a mismatch trigger event has occurred with regards to where the particular endpoint device is currently situated, the mismatch trigger event being based upon a comparison of previous geolocation data and of current geolocation data, wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds with occurrence of at least one configurable geolocation event or configurable time-based event indicating that a location change, detected by the comparison, is to be reported;

reporting circuitry, communicatively integrated with the particular endpoint device, to send and in response to determining that the mismatched trigger event has occurred with regards to where the particular endpoint device is currently situated, the current geolocation data from the particular endpoint device to a VoIP server; and

computer processing circuitry to operate with the VoIP server for providing the plurality of data communication services, to

store, in a location database, current geolocation data from multiple sources corresponding to particular endpoint device, and

validate a certain one of the multiple sources for satisfying confidence criteria concerning the current geolocation data stored in the location database for the particular endpoint device and, in response, use the current geolocation data stored in the location database to process a call involving the particular endpoint device.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuitry is to compare the current geolocation data and the previous geolocation data to detect the location change.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the previous geolocation data corresponds to one of: a previously-reported geolocation data, programmed geographic-specific data, and geographic map data corresponding to one or more limited geographic regions.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data falling outside of a particular radius from a second geographic location.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data being in a new municipality relative to a second geographic location indicated by the previous geolocation data.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the mismatch trigger event corresponds to a first geographic location indicated by the current geolocation data being in a new municipality relative to a second geographic location, and wherein the processing circuitry is to determine, based upon the comparison, that the first geographic location is within a different country than the second geographic location.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuitry is to obtain, via the particular endpoint device, the current geolocation data from global positioning system (GPS) circuitry, and wherein the particular endpoint device is to determine that the mismatch trigger event has occurred in response to a determination that the particular endpoint device is being registered to a different VoIP server relative to a previously-reported VoIP server.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the occurrence of the mismatch trigger event is based on at least one time-based event criteria being satisfied for the particular endpoint device, and wherein each respective VoIP-capable endpoint device includes a specified time interval between which location updates are performed.

18. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the processing circuitry is to select, in response to the mismatch trigger event, one of the servers for providing data-communication services to the particular endpoint device based on a location of the selected one of the servers and the current geolocation of the particular endpoint device, and wherein the particular endpoint device includes a software application configured to store the geolocation data in memory circuitry of the particular endpoint device.
