Abstract

Methods and systems for identifying altered content are described herein. The system determines a content type for an unverified content item and determines verification criteria based on the content type. The system then locates a first verified content item corresponding to the unverified content item. Based on comparing the unverified content item to the first verified content item, the system determines whether the unverified content item violates the verification criteria. If the unverified content item violates the verification criteria, the system displays a verification flag indicating that the unverified content item violates the verification criteria. If the unverified content item does not violate the verification criteria, the system displays a verification flag indicating that the unverified content item does not violate the verification criteria.

Claims (55)

1. A method comprising:

retrieving verification criteria for an unverified content item, wherein the verification criteria comprises a plurality of rules;

determining whether the unverified content item violates a first rule of the plurality of rules based on a comparison of the unverified content item to a first verified content item;

in response to determining the unverified content item violates the first rule, determining whether the unverified content item violates a second rule of the plurality of rules, wherein the second rule is related to violating the first rule;

in response to determining the unverified content item does not violate the first rule, determining whether the unverified content item violates a third rule of the plurality of rules, wherein the third rule is related to not violating the first rule;

determining, based on the first rule and the second rule or based on the first rule and the third rule, that the unverified content item violates the verification criteria; and

storing a verification flag in association with the unverified content item, wherein the verification flag indicates that the unverified content item violates the verification criteria.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein retrieving the verification criteria comprises:

identifying a content type corresponding to the unverified content item;

in response to identifying the content type, determining whether there are verification criteria corresponding to the content type; and

retrieving, from memory, the verification criteria corresponding to the content type.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria are provided based on inputs to an interface.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria are provided by a service provider corresponding to the unverified content item.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria comprises acceptable changes at least in audio frequency, audio speed, or audio volume in segments of audio content corresponding to frames in the unverified content item.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first verified content item comprises a content item comprising a plurality of frames, wherein each of the plurality of frames are determined to be unaltered from a source format, wherein the source format is defined by a service provider.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein determining whether the unverified content item violates the first rule of the plurality of rules based on the comparison of the unverified content item to the first verified content item comprises:

comparing attributes of a plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item to attributes of the plurality of frames comprising the first verified content item;

determining that a threshold number of pixels of at least one frame of the plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item do not match corresponding pixels of a frames of the plurality of frames comprising the first verified content item; and

determining which of the at least one frame of the plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item to mark as altered.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

retrieving a plurality of verified content items;

determining, based on content of the plurality of verified content items and content of the first verified content item, a veracity threshold, wherein the veracity threshold is determined as a threshold of difference between unverified content and verified content that indicates whether the unverified content violates the verification criteria;

determining a difference metric between the unverified content item and the first verified content item based on the verification criteria; and

determining, based on an altered portion of the unverified content item and content of the first verified content item, whether the unverified content item violates the verification criteria by comparing the difference metric to the veracity threshold.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the verification flag is displayed before the unverified content item is displayed.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the verification flag comprises an indication of verification status along with information above the unverified content item.

11. A system comprising:

memory; and

control circuitry configured to:

retrieve verification criteria for an unverified content item, wherein the verification criteria comprises a plurality of rules;

determine whether the unverified content item violates a first rule of the plurality of rules based on a comparison of the unverified content item to a first verified content item;

in response to determining the unverified content item violates the first rule, determine whether the unverified content item violates a second rule of the plurality of rules, wherein the second rule is related to violating the first rule;

in response to determining the unverified content item does not violate the first rule, determine whether the unverified content item violates a third rule of the plurality of rules, wherein the third rule is related to not violating the first rule;

determine, based on the first rule and the second rule or based on the first rule and the third rule, that the unverified content item violates the verification criteria; and

store a verification flag in association with the unverified content item, wherein the verification flag indicates that the unverified content item violates the verification criteria.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to retrieve the verification criteria is further configured to:

identify a content type corresponding to the unverified content item;

in response to identifying the content type, determine whether there are verification criteria corresponding to the content type; and

retrieve, from memory, the verification criteria corresponding to the content type.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry configured to retrieve the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria is further configured to retrieve the plurality of rules provided based on inputs to an interface.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the control circuitry configured to retrieve the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria is further configured to retrieve the plurality of rules provided by a service provider corresponding to the unverified content item.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to retrieve the plurality of rules comprising the verification criteria is further configured to retrieve the plurality of rules comprising acceptable changes at least in audio frequency, audio speed, or audio volume in segments of audio content corresponding to frames in the unverified content item.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to determine whether the unverified content item violates the first rule of the plurality of rules based on a comparison of the unverified content item to the first verified content item is further configured to:

compare the unverified content item to the first verified content item, wherein the first verified content item comprises a content item comprising a plurality of frames, wherein each of the plurality of frames are determined to be unaltered from a source format, wherein the source format is defined by a service provider.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

compare attributes of a plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item to attributes of the plurality of frames comprising the first verified content item;

determine that a threshold number of pixels of at least one frame of the plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item do not match corresponding pixels of a frames of the plurality of frames comprising the first verified content item; and

determine which of the at least one frame of the plurality of frames comprising the unverified content item to mark as altered.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

retrieve a plurality of verified content items;

determine, based on content of the plurality of verified content items and content of the first verified content item, a veracity threshold, wherein the veracity threshold is determined as a threshold of difference between unverified content and verified content that indicates whether the unverified content violates the verification criteria;

determine a difference metric between the unverified content item and the first verified content item based on the verification criteria; and

determine, based on an altered portion of the unverified content item and content of the first verified content item, whether the unverified content item violates the verification criteria by comparing the difference metric to the veracity threshold.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry configured to store the verification flag is further configured to display the verification flag before the unverified content item is displayed.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the control circuitry configured to display the verification flag is further configured to display an indication of verification status along with information above the unverified content item.
