Abstract

A cutting device is disclosed. The cutting device has a housing, a cutting assembly that is movably disposed in the housing, the cutting assembly including a body member, an actuating member, and a first urging member that is configured to urge the actuating member away from the body member, from an inner position toward an outer position relative to the body member, by applying a first urging force, and a second urging member that is configured to urge the cutting assembly to retract within the housing by applying a second urging force that urges the actuating member to move from an extended position toward a retracted position relative to the housing. The housing includes at least one recess.

Claims (38)

1 . A cutting device, comprising:

a cutting assembly slidable between a retracted position and an extended position, the cutting assembly comprising,

a body member, and

an actuating member formed separately from the body member and having one or more actuating member protrusions extending from an edge of the actuating member, wherein the actuating member is adapted to be pressable between an outward position and an inward position, the inward position being defined by the actuating member being pressed closer to the body member relative to the outward position; and

a housing configured to slidably retain the cutting assembly, the housing comprising,

a bottom portion having an internal surface formed with one or more walls protruding upward from the internal surface, wherein the one or more walls block the cutting assembly from moving to the retracted position by abutting with the one or more actuating member protrusions when the body member is in the extended position and the actuating member is pressed to the inward position, and

a top portion configured to receive the actuating member, wherein the one or more actuating member protrusions extend under an inner surface of the top portion and over a top surface of the body member.

2 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the body member is formed with one or more apertures and a rear side of the actuating member is formed with one or more body member protrusions that are movably engaged with the apertures of the body member.

3 . The cutting device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more body member protrusions of the actuating member slide within the one or more apertures of the body member when the actuating member moves between the outward and inward positions.

4 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more actuating member protrusions include a first actuating member protrusion and a second actuating member protrusion that extend from opposite lateral edges of the actuating member.

5 . The cutting device of claim 1 , further comprising an urging member that is adapted to bias the actuating member to the outward position and away from the body member, wherein the urging member is received in an urging member aperture formed in the body member.

6 . The cutting device of claim 1 , further comprising a locking member adapted to slide between a locked position and an unlocked position.

7 . The cutting device of claim 6 , wherein the top portion and the bottom portion are separable when the locking member is moved to the unlocked position.

8 . The cutting device of claim 6 , wherein the locking member is formed with a slot that engages with both the top portion and the bottom portion of the housing.

9 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the body member is formed with a blade receiving portion.

10 . The cutting device of claim 1 , wherein the body member and the actuating member move in unison between the retracted position and the extended position and the actuating member moves independently of the body member between the outward position and inward position.

11 . A cutting device, comprising:

a cutting assembly slidable between a retracted position and an extended position, the cutting assembly comprising,

a body member formed with one or more apertures,

an actuating member having one or more actuating member protrusions extending from one or more lateral edges of the actuating member, and the actuating member having a rear side formed with one or more body member protrusions that are configured to be slidably received in the one or more apertures of the body member, wherein the actuating member is adapted to be pressable between an outward position and an inward position, the inward position being defined by the actuating member being pressed closer to the body member relative to the outward position; and

a housing configured to slidably retain the cutting assembly the housing comprising,

a bottom portion formed with one or more walls protruding upward from the internal surface, wherein the one or more walls block the cutting assembly from moving to the retracted position by abutting with the actuating member protrusions when the body member is in the extended position and the actuating member is pressed to the inward position, and

a top portion formed with an actuating member aperture configured to encircle the actuating member, wherein the one or more actuating member protrusions extend under an edge of the actuating member aperture.

12 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the one or more body member protrusions of the actuating member slide within the one or more apertures of the body member when the actuating member moves between the outward and inward positions.

13 . The cutting device of claim 11 , further comprising an urging member that is adapted to bias the actuating member to the outward position and away from the body member, wherein the urging member is received in an urging member aperture formed in the body member.

14 . The cutting device of claim 11 , further comprising a locking member adapted to slide between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein the housing comprises a top member and a bottom member that are separable when the locking member is moved to the unlocked position.

15 . The cutting device of claim 11 , wherein the body member is formed with a blade receiving portion.

16 . A cutting device, comprising:

a cutting assembly slidable between a retracted position and an extended position, the cutting assembly comprising,

a body member,

an actuating member formed separately from the body member and having one or more actuating member protrusions extending from an edge of the actuating member, wherein the actuating member is adapted to be pressable between outward position and an inward position, the inward position being defined by the actuating member being pressed closer to the body member relative to the outward position; and

a housing configured to slidably retain the cutting assembly, the housing comprising,

a bottom portion having an internal surface formed with protrusions that define a track to guide the cutting assembly between the retracted and extended positions, wherein a first end of each of the protrusions of the track is formed as a wall that extends upward from the internal surface blocks the cutting assembly from moving to the retracted position by abutting with the one or more actuating member protrusions when the body member is in the extended position and the actuating member is pressed to the inward position, and

a top portion formed with an actuating member aperture configured to encircle the actuating member, wherein the actuating member aperture is formed in an opposing interior wall from the track.

17 . The cutting device of claim 16 , further comprising an urging member that is adapted to bias the actuating member to the outward position, wherein the urging member is received in an urging member aperture formed in the body member.

The cutting device of claim 16 , further comprising one or more apertures formed in the body member and one or more body member protrusions formed on a rear side of the actuating member, wherein the one or more body member protrusions of the actuating member are configured to be slidably received in the one or more apertures of the body member when the actuating member moves between the outward and inward positions.

The cutting device of claim 16 , further comprising a locking member adapted to slide between a locked position and an unlocked position, wherein the housing comprises a top member and a bottom member and the locking member is formed with a slot that engages with both the top member and bottom member of the housing.

20 . The cutting device of claim 16 , wherein the body member is formed with a blade receiving portion.
