Abstract

A vehicle includes a passenger capsule, a front module, a rear module, an engine, a transaxle, a front lift structure, and a rear lift structure. The front module is coupled to a front end of the passenger capsule. The front module includes a first longitudinal frame member, a second longitudinal frame member, and a front axle assembly. The rear module is coupled to a rear end of the passenger capsule and includes a rear axle assembly. The engine is coupled to the front module. The transaxle is coupled to the rear module. The transaxle includes a housing. The rear axle assembly includes a component that is directly coupled to the housing of the transaxle. The front lift structure includes protrusions extending from the first longitudinal frame member and the second longitudinal frame member. The rear lift structure includes protrusions extending from opposing lateral sides of the structural shell.

Claims (28)

1. A military vehicle comprising:

a passenger capsule including a structural shell having a front end and a rear end;

a front module coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule, the front module including a first longitudinal frame member, a second longitudinal frame member, a front differential, and a front axle assembly, wherein the first longitudinal frame member and the second longitudinal frame member extend within a common plane;

a rear module coupled to the rear end of the passenger capsule and including a rear axle assembly;

an engine coupled to the front module;

a transaxle coupled to the rear module, the front differential, and the engine, the transaxle including:

a mechanical disconnect that facilitates decoupling the transaxle from the front differential; and

a housing that defines a structural component of the rear module, wherein the rear axle assembly includes at least one of an upper control arm, a lower control arm, a spring, or a damper that is directly coupled to the housing of the transaxle;

a front lift structure including:

a first protrusion extending from the first longitudinal frame member and defining a first aperture;

a second protrusion extending from the second longitudinal frame member and defining a second aperture, wherein the first protrusion and the second protrusion are generally orthogonal to the common plane;

wherein the first aperture and the second aperture form a pair of front lift points; and

wherein a lifting force applied to the pair of front lift points is transmitted through the front module into the structural shell of the passenger capsule; and

a rear lift structure including a third protrusion and a fourth protrusion extending from opposing lateral sides of the structural shell, the third protrusion and the fourth protrusion defining a third aperture and a fourth aperture, respectively, to form a pair of rear lift points.

2. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the passenger capsule includes two passenger doors or four passenger doors.

3. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the structural shell includes a structural tunnel extending along a floor thereof, the structural tunnel having an arcuate shaped profile extending into an interior of the passenger capsule (i) with a driver seat on a first side thereof and a passenger seat on a second side thereof and (ii) which increases a distance between a ground surface and the floor relative to portions of the floor adjacent the structural tunnel.

4. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the passenger capsule includes a V-shaped belly deflector positioned beneath the structural shell, wherein lateral ends of the V-shaped belly deflector are coupled to sidewalls of the structural shell.

5. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the front lift structure includes a lateral frame member extending between the first protrusion and the second protrusion.

6. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the third protrusion and the fourth protrusion extend backward from a rear edge of the passenger capsule, away from the from the front lift structure.

7. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the structural shell has a monocoque hull structure that does not include frame rails extending longitudinally along a bottom thereof.

8. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the front module or the rear module comprises a breakaway section, and wherein the breakaway section is configured to fail during a blast event such that the breakaway section at least partially separates from the passenger capsule to dissipate blast energy.

9. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the transaxle includes a transfercase and a rear differential contained at least partially within the housing thereof.

10. The military vehicle of claim 9 , wherein the transfercase is coupled to the rear differential and the front differential, wherein the rear differential is coupled to the rear axle assembly, and wherein the front differential is coupled to the front axle assembly.

11. A military vehicle comprising:

a transaxle having a housing, the transaxle including:

a transfercase configured to couple to an engine and a front differential of the military vehicle; and

a rear differential coupled to the transfercase, the rear differential configured to couple to a rear axle of the military vehicle, wherein the rear differential and the transfercase are at least partially contained within the housing of the transaxle; and

a suspension system, wherein at least one component of the suspension system is directly coupled to the housing of the transaxle.
