Abstract

A military vehicle includes a passenger capsule, a front module coupled to a front end of the passenger capsule, and a rear module coupled to a rear end of the passenger capsule. The passenger capsule has a frame rail-less monocoque hull structure. The front module includes a first longitudinal frame member coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule proximate a first side thereof, a second longitudinal frame member coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule proximate an opposing second side thereof, and an underbody support structure coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule, the first longitudinal frame member, and the second longitudinal frame member. The underbody support structure is positioned beneath the first longitudinal frame member and the second longitudinal frame member.

Claims (48)

1. A military vehicle comprising:

a passenger capsule having a frame rail-less monocoque hull structure;

a front module coupled to a front end of the passenger capsule, the front module including:

a first longitudinal frame member coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule proximate a first side thereof;

a second longitudinal frame member coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule proximate an opposing second side thereof;

an underbody support structure coupled to the front end of the passenger capsule, the first longitudinal frame member, and the second longitudinal frame member, the underbody support structure positioned beneath the first longitudinal frame member and the second longitudinal frame member; and

a front differential that is a front structural component of the front module;

a rear module coupled to a rear end of the passenger capsule, the rear module including a transaxle that is a rear structural component of the rear module; and

an engine, wherein the front differential defines an engine mount to which the engine is mounted.

2. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the underbody support structure defines a plurality of apertures that provide tie down points.

The military vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a front lift structure including (i) a first protrusion extending from the first longitudinal frame member and defining a first lift point and (ii) a second protrusion extending from the second longitudinal frame member and defining a second lift point.

4. The military vehicle of claim 3 , wherein the front lift structure includes a lateral frame member extending between the first protrusion and the second protrusion.

The military vehicle of claim 3 , further comprising a rear lift structure including a third protrusion and a fourth protrusion extending from the rear end of the passenger capsule at opposing lateral sides thereof, the third protrusion and the fourth protrusion defining a third aperture and a fourth aperture, respectively, to form a pair of rear lift points.

6. The military vehicle of claim 5 , wherein the third protrusion and the fourth protrusion extend backward from a rear edge of the passenger capsule, away from the from the front lift structure.

7. The military vehicle of claim 1 , further comprising a suspension system, wherein a component of the suspension system is directly coupled to a housing of the transaxle.

8. The military vehicle of claim 7 , wherein the component includes at least one of an upper control arm, a lower control arm, a spring, or a damper.

The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the monocoque hull structure includes a structural tunnel extending along a floor thereof, the structural tunnel having an arcuate shaped profile extending into an interior of the monocoque hull structure (i) with a driver seat on a first side thereof and a passenger seat on a second side thereof and (ii) which increases a distance between a ground surface and the floor relative to portions of the floor adjacent the structural tunnel.

10. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the passenger capsule includes a V-shaped belly deflector positioned beneath the monocoque hull structure, wherein lateral ends of the V-shaped belly deflector are coupled to sidewalls of the monocoque hull structure.

11. The military vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the monocoque hull structure includes a roof, a floor, and sidewalls, and wherein the roof, the floor, and the sidewalls are bolted together.

12. A military vehicle comprising:

a monocoque hull structure including:

a roof;

a floor having a structural tunnel extending from a front end to a rear end of the monocoque hull structure, the structural tunnel having an arcuate shaped profile; and

sidewalls coupling the roof to the floor;

wherein, for loading purposes, the structural tunnel is configured to replace and thereby eliminate frame rails extending beneath the monocoque hull structure; and

a front module coupled to the front end of the monocoque hull structure, the front module including:

a front differential defining an engine mount;

an axle coupled to the front differential; and

an engine coupled to the engine mount and at least partially supported by the front differential.

13. The military vehicle of claim 12 , further comprising:

a front lift structure including:

a first protrusion extending upward from the front module and defining a first lift point;

a second protrusion extending upward from the front module and defining a second lift point; and

a lateral frame member extending between the first protrusion and the second protrusion; and

a rear lift structure including a third protrusion and a fourth protrusion extending backward from the rear end of the monocoque hull structure at opposing lateral sides thereof, away from the from the front lift structure, wherein the third protrusion and the fourth protrusion define a third aperture and a fourth aperture, respectively, to form a pair of rear lift points.

The military vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the sidewalls include tubular members positioned along bottom edges thereof, further comprising a V-shaped belly deflector having lateral ends coupled to the tubular members such that the V-shaped belly deflector is positioned beneath and spaced from the floor.

15. The military vehicle of claim 12 , wherein the roof, the floor, and the sidewalls are bolted together.

16. A military vehicle comprising:

a passenger capsule having a monocoque hull structure that does not include frame rails extending longitudinally along a bottom thereof;

a front module coupled to a front end of the passenger capsule, the front module including:

an engine;

a front differential defining an engine mount to which the engine is mounted; and

a front axle coupled to the front differential;

a rear module coupled to a rear end of the passenger capsule, the rear module including:

a rear axle; and

a transaxle coupled to the engine, the front differential, and the rear axle; and

a suspension system including at least one component directly coupled to a housing of the transaxle.

17. The military vehicle of claim 16 , wherein a floor of the monocoque hull structure includes a structural tunnel extending from the front end to the rear end.
