Abstract

In some embodiments, apparatuses and methods are provided herein useful to provide fluid nutrition and hydration. In one illustrative example, a feeding set for use with a peristaltic enteral feeding pump has sections of flexible tubing or conduit, a dispensing control valve that is in fluid communication with the tubing, and a retention disk. In some configurations, the feeding set has as attachment mechanism, which may be formed by one clips or hooks extending from the dispensing control valve and coupling geometry of the retention disk. By some approaches, the clips or hooks and the coupling geometry are configured to attach the feeding set with the pump, such as by attaching the feeding set to an internal panel of the feeding pump. In operation, the feeding set and pump are used to move fluid nutrition and hydration from a container or bag to the patient in a controlled manner.

Claims (43)

1. An enteral feed pump for use with a feeding set having a dispensing control valve shiftable between a plurality of positions, a first tubing element extending between an exit of the dispensing control valve and an attachment mechanism, one or more second tubing elements for fluidly connecting fluid nutrition or water to one or more inlets of the dispensing control valve, the enteral feed pump comprising:

a housing body;

a pump door hingedly attached to the housing body, the pump door movable between an open configuration and a closed configuration;

an internal panel coupled to and disposed between the housing body and the pump door, the internal panel having a portion covered by the pump door when the pump door is in the closed configuration;

a peristaltic pump disposed in the housing body and having a portion that is operable through an opening in the portion of the internal panel to engage with a section of the first tubing element;

an arm coupled to and movable relative to the internal panel, the arm operable to produce a translational movement that shifts the dispensing control valve between the plurality of positions;

a first peripheral edge of the internal panel configured to be releasably engaged by the dispensing control valve, the first peripheral edge defining an upper boundary of the internal panel with respect to the housing body; and

a second peripheral edge of the internal panel configured to be releasably engaged by the attachment mechanism, the second peripheral edge defining a lower boundary of the internal panel with respect to the housing body, wherein the lower boundary is opposite of the upper boundary and the opening is located between the upper boundary and the lower boundary.

The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the peristaltic pump that is operable through the opening comprises a plurality of keys that extend farther or advance through the opening and are configured to compress or pinch the section of the first tubing element between one of the plurality of keys and the pump door to move the fluid nutrition or water through the section of the first tubing element.

3. The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , for use with the feeding set wherein the first tubing element is elastomeric, wherein a distance between the first peripheral edge and the second peripheral edge is such that the first tubing element is put under tension.

4. The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , for use with the feeding set wherein the attachment mechanism is a retention disk.

5. The enteral feed pump of claim 4 , for use with the feeding set wherein the dispensing control valve has at least one clip extending therefrom, wherein the first peripheral edge is configured to engage the at least one clip of the dispensing control valve.

The enteral feed pump of claim 4 , for use with the feeding set wherein the dispensing control valve has a feed port with a first clip and a flush portion with a second clip, wherein the first peripheral edge is configured to engage the first clip and the second clip of the dispensing control valve.

7. The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , wherein the arm is rotatable relative to the internal panel.

8. The enteral feed pump of claim 7 , wherein the arm moves within a depression of the internal panel.

9. The enteral feed pump of claim 8 , wherein the depression is pie-shaped.

The enteral feed pump of claim 7 , wherein the dispensing control valve of the feeding set includes a plunger to which the translational movement is applied to control flow through the dispensing control valve, and wherein the arm is configured to move, the plunger between different configurations.

11. The enteral feed pump of claim 10 , wherein the arm is configured to mate with the plunger of the dispensing control valve.

The enteral feed pump of claim 7 , wherein the dispensing control valve of the feeding set includes a plunger to which the translational movement is applied to control flow through the dispensing control valve, and wherein the plurality of positions the arm is configured to shift the dispensing control valve between include a feed configuration of the plunger, a flush configuration of the plunger, and a no-flow configuration of the plunger.

13. The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , in combination with the feeding set.

14. The enteral feed pump of claim 1 , wherein the dispensing control valve and the attachment mechanism are disposed at least partially outside the internal panel when respectively engaging the first peripheral edge and the second edge peripheral edge.

A method of installing in the enteral feed pump of claim 1 the feeding set, the method comprising engaging the first peripheral edge of the internal panel with the dispensing control valve and engaging the second peripheral edge of the internal panel with the attachment mechanism to position the section of the first tubing element for engagement with the portion of the peristaltic pump that is operable through the opening of the internal panel such that the portion of the peristaltic pump can engage the section of the first tubing element.

The method of claim 15 , wherein the portion of the peristaltic pump that is operable through the opening comprises a plurality of keys that extend farther or advance through the opening and are configured to compress or pinch the section of the first tubing element between one of the plurality of keys and the pump door to move the fluid nutrition or water through the section of the first tubing element.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the first tubing element is elastomeric, wherein a distance between the first peripheral edge and the second peripheral edge is such that the first tubing element is put under tension.

18. The method of claim 15 , wherein the attachment mechanism is a retention disk.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein the dispensing control valve has at least one clip extending therefrom and wherein the first peripheral edge is configured to engage the at least one clip of the dispensing control valve.

20. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

moving the pump door to the open configuration;

installing the feeding set; and

moving the pump door to the closed configuration.

21. A feeding set comprising:

a dispensing control valve sized for placement at least partially within an enteral feeding pump and configured to releasably engage a first retention portion of the enteral feeding pump, the dispensing control valve having a plunger positioned at least partly therein to selectively control a flow of fluid through the dispensing control valve via translational movement of the plunger through a plurality of positions;

a peristaltic tubing element fluidly connected to an exit of the dispensing control valve, the peristaltic tubing element being elastomeric; and

an attachment mechanism configured to releasably engage a second retention portion of the enteral feeding pump;

wherein the peristaltic tubing element is sized to be placed under tension and for said peristaltic tubing element to be retained with respect to the enteral feeding pump via tension when the dispensing control valve engages the first retention portion of the enteral feeding pump and the attachment mechanism engages the second retention portion of the enteral feeding pump; and

wherein the dispensing control valve and the attachment mechanism are disposed at least partially outside the enteral feeding pump when engaging the first retention portion and the second retention portion, respectively.

22. A feeding set with an attachment mechanism for use with an enteral feeding pump, the feeding set comprising:

a dispensing control valve having a plunger positioned at least partly therein and at least one clip extending therefrom, the at least one clip configured to engage with a first retention portion of an internal panel of the enteral feeding pump and the plunger configured to selectively control a flow of fluid through the dispensing control valve via translational movement of the plunger through a plurality of positions;

a peristaltic first tubing element fluidly connected to an exit of the dispensing control valve, the peristaltic first tubing element being elastomeric;

a retention disk configured to engage a second retention portion of the internal panel and the peristaltic first tubing element pulling the retention disk upward, through tension, toward the dispensing control valve and into engagement with the second retention portion of the internal panel such that the feeding set retains the connection with the internal panel of the enteral feeding pump via the at least one clip and the retention disk;

a second tubing element for fluidly connecting at least one bag of fluid to the dispensing control valve; and

a third tubing element configured to be fluidly connected to the peristaltic first tubing element and the third tubing element having a patient coupling fitted thereto;

wherein the at least one clip of the dispensing control valve and the retention disk are disposed at least partially outside the internal panel when respectively engaging the first retention portion and the second retention portion.
