Diffusion barriers for metallic superconducting wires
In various embodiments, superconducting wires incorporate diffusion barriers composed of Ta alloys that resist internal diffusion and provide superior mechanical strength to the wires.
1. A superconducting wire comprising:
a wire matrix comprising Cu; and
a plurality of composite filaments embedded within the wire matrix,
wherein:
each composite filament comprises (i) a plurality of Nb-based monofilaments, (ii) a diffusion barrier comprising a Ta-W alloy, and (iii) a cladding comprising Cu surrounding the diffusion barrier, the diffusion barrier separating the cladding from the plurality of monofilaments,
at least one diffusion barrier additionally contains one or more alloying elements selected from the group consisting of Ru, Pt, Pd, Rh, Os, Ir, Mo, Re, and Si;
the diffusion barriers collectively occupy 2%-15% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire, and
each diffusion barrier extends through an axial dimension of its composite filament.
2. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb alloyed with at least one of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Y, or La.
3. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and, surrounding the core, a cladding comprising Cu.
4. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and Sn.
5. The wire of claim 1 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb 3 Sn.
6. The wire of claim 1 , wherein at least one diffusion barrier contains 0.2%-10% W.
7. The wire of claim 1 , wherein at least one diffusion barrier comprises Ta-3W.
8. The wire of claim 1 , wherein a yield strength of the superconducting wire is at least 100 MPa.
9. The wire of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the composite filaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
10. The wire of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the monofilaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
11. The wire of claim 1 , further comprising a stabilizing element extending through the axial dimension of the superconducting wire, the stabilizing element comprising (i) Ta, (ii) a Ta-W alloy, or (iii) an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W.
12. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises a Ta-W alloy containing 0.2%-10% W.
13. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W.
14. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises Ta-3W.
15. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Y or W.
16. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies less than approximately 20% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
17. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies more than approximately 1% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
18. The wire of claim 11 , wherein the stabilizing element is disposed at a radial center of the wire.
19. A superconducting wire comprising:
a wire matrix comprising Cu; and
a plurality of composite filaments embedded within the wire matrix,
wherein:
each composite filament comprises (i) a plurality of Nb-based monofilaments, (ii) a diffusion barrier comprising a Ta-W alloy, and (iii) a cladding comprising Cu surrounding the diffusion barrier, the diffusion barrier separating the cladding from the plurality of monofilaments,
at least one diffusion barrier comprises Ta-3W;
the diffusion barriers collectively occupy 2%-15% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire, and
each diffusion barrier extends through an axial dimension of its composite filament.
20. The wire of claim 19 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb alloyed with at least one of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Y, or La.
21. The wire of claim 19 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and, surrounding the core, a cladding comprising Cu.
22. The wire of claim 19 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and Sn.
23. The wire of claim 19 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb 3 Sn.
24. The wire of claim 19 , wherein a yield strength of the superconducting wire is at least 100 MPa.
25. The wire of claim 19 , wherein at least one of the composite filaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
26. The wire of claim 19 , wherein at least one of the monofilaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
27. The wire of claim 19 , further comprising a stabilizing element extending through the axial dimension of the superconducting wire, the stabilizing element comprising (i) Ta, (ii) a Ta-W alloy, or (iii) an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W.
28. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises a Ta-W alloy containing 0.2%-10% W.
29. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W.
30. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises Ta-3W.
31. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Y or W.
32. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies less than approximately 20% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
33. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies more than approximately 1% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
34. The wire of claim 27 , wherein the stabilizing element is disposed at a radial center of the wire.
35. A superconducting wire comprising:
a wire matrix comprising Cu;
a plurality of composite filaments embedded within the wire matrix; and
disposed at a radial center of the wire, only a single stabilizing element extending through the axial dimension of the superconducting wire, the stabilizing element comprising (i) Ta, (ii) a Ta-W alloy, or (iii) an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W,
wherein:
each composite filament comprises (i) a plurality of Nb-based monofilaments, (ii) a diffusion barrier comprising a Ta-W alloy, and (iii) a cladding comprising Cu surrounding the diffusion barrier, the diffusion barrier separating the cladding from the plurality of monofilaments,
the diffusion barriers collectively occupy 2%-15% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire, and
each diffusion barrier extends through an axial dimension of its composite filament.
36. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises a Ta-W alloy containing 0.2%-10% W.
37. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Hf, Ti, Zr, Ta, V, Y, Mo, or W.
38. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises Ta-3W.
39. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element comprises an alloy of Nb and at least one of Y or W.
40. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies less than approximately 20% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
41. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the stabilizing element occupies more than approximately 1% of a cross-sectional area of the superconducting wire.
42. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb alloyed with at least one of Ti, Zr, Hf, Ta, Y, or La.
43. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and, surrounding the core, a cladding comprising Cu.
44. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb and Sn.
45. The wire of claim 35 , wherein the core of at least one monofilament comprises Nb 3 Sn.
46. The wire of claim 35 , wherein at least one diffusion barrier contains 0.2%-10% W.
47. The wire of claim 35 , wherein at least one diffusion barrier comprises Ta-3W.
48. The wire of claim 35 , wherein at least one diffusion barrier additionally contains one or more alloying elements selected from the group consisting of Ru, Pt, Pd, Rh, Os, Ir, Mo, Re, or Si.
49. The wire of claim 35 , wherein a yield strength of the superconducting wire is at least 100 MPa.
50. The wire of claim 35 , wherein at least one of the composite filaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
51. The wire of claim 35 , wherein at least one of the monofilaments has a hexagonal cross-sectional shape.
