Abstract

A communication system is disclosed in which a base station receives, from at least one further base station, information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of each further base station. The base station also receives, from a core network, information identifying a registration area for a user equipment (UE). The base station defines, based on the received information identifying at least one respective tracking area and the received information identifying a registration area, a radio access network (RAN) based notification area for the UE.

Claims (36)

1. A method performed by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

receiving, from a radio access network (RAN) node, information for configuring the UE with a RAN-based notification area,

wherein the RAN-based notification area represents an area configured, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity between the RAN node and at least one further RAN node, to:

cover at least one cell;

be contained within the registration area; and

represent an area within which the UE can move while remaining in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state,

wherein the registration area for the UE is identified by second information received from an access and mobility management function node, the second information comprising a tracking area list including at least a tracking area identifier of a tracking area, and

wherein the at least one further RAN node sends, to the RAN node, first information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of the at least one further RAN node.

2. A user equipment (UE) comprising:

a controller; and

a transceiver,

wherein the controller is configured to:

receive, from a radio access network (RAN) node, information for configuring the UE with a RAN-based notification area,

wherein the RAN-based notification area represents an area configured to, taking account of a registration area for the UE and connectivity between the RAN node and at least one further RAN node:

cover at least one cell;

be contained within the registration area; and

represent an area within which the UE can move while remaining in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state,

wherein the registration area for the UE is identified by second information received from an access and mobility management function node, the second information comprising a tracking area list including at least a tracking area identifier of a tracking area, and

wherein the at least one further RAN node sends, to the RAN node, first information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of the at least one further RAN node.

3. A method performed by a radio access network (RAN) node, the method comprising:

receiving, from at least one further RAN node, first information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of the at least one further RAN node;

receiving, from an access and mobility management function node, second information identifying a registration area configured for a user equipment (UE), the second information comprising a tracking area list including at least a tracking area identifier of a tracking area; and

configuring, taking account of the registration area and connectivity with the at least one further RAN node, a RAN based notification area for the UE,

wherein the RAN based notification area covers at least one cell,

wherein the RAN based notification area represents an area within which the UE can move while remaining in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, and

wherein the RAN based notification area is contained within the registration area.

4. A base station of a radio access network (RAN), the base station comprising:

a controller; and

a transceiver,

wherein the controller is configured to:

receive, from at least one further RAN node, first information identifying at least one respective tracking area associated with at least one cell of the at least one further RAN node;

receive, from an access and mobility management function node, second information identifying a registration area configured for a user equipment (UE), the second information comprising a tracking area list including at least a tracking area identifier of a tracking area; and

configure, taking account of the registration area and connectivity with the at least one further RAN node, a RAN based notification area for the UE,

wherein the RAN based notification area covers at least one cell,

wherein the RAN based notification area represents an area within which the UE can move while remaining in a Radio Resource Control (RRC) inactive state, and

wherein the RAN based notification area is contained within the registration area.
