Abstract

Some embodiments provide a forwarding element that detects and handles elephant flows. In detecting, the forwarding element of some embodiments monitors statistics or measurements relating to a data flow. In handling, the forwarding element marks each packet associated with a detected elephant flow in some manner to differentiate it from a packet associated with a mouse flow. Alternatively, the forwarding element of break elephant flows into a number mouse flow by facilitating in sending packets associated with the detected elephant flow along different paths.

Claims (47)

1. A method of processing packets associated with a large packet flow, the method comprising:

at a forwarding element:

receiving first and second packet flows associated with first and second different source ports;

determining, using at least statistical data comprising at least a byte count and packet count, that a third large packet flow comprises an elephant flow;

marking packets of the third packet flow with a differentiated services code point (DSCP) bit in tunnel headers, the DSCP being used for assigning packets of the third packet flow to internal queues;

determining that the first and second flows are part of a larger third packet flow that was broken up into the first and second flow;

combining the first and second flows into one packet flow;

forwarding the combined packet flow to a destination of the combined packet flow.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein combining the first and second flows comprises using sequence numbers stored in header values of packets of the received first and second flows to order the packets in the combined flow.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein combining the first and second flows comprises:

receiving a first packet;

determining that there is at least a second packet that is prior to the first packet in the third packet flow that has not yet been received;

storing the first packet in a storage until the second packet has been received.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein combining the first and second flows further comprises:

receiving the second packet;

forwarding the second packet to the destination;

retrieving the first packet from the storage;

forwarding the first packet to the destination.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the first and second packet flows are part of the larger third packet flow comprises using an elephant flow identifier stored in header values of packets of the first and second packet flows to determine that the packets are part of the third packet flow.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forwarding element is an edge forwarding element (EFE).

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the EFE is a first EFE, and a second EFE detects that the third packet flow is a large packet flow, breaks up the third packet flow into first and second packet flows, assigns the first and second source ports to packets of the first and second packet flows, and forwards the packets of the first and second flows.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein a non-edge forwarding element between the first and second EFEs in a network uses the first and second source ports to select different paths through the network for the first and second packet flows and forwards the first and second packet flows along the selected different paths.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein packets of the first and second packet flows are encapsulated with encapsulating packet headers that store the first and second source ports.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the encapsulating headers are tunnel headers used to encapsulate packets exchanged between elements of a logical overlay network.

11. A non-transitory machine readable medium storing a program for execution by at least one processing unit to process packets associated with a large packet flow, the program comprising:

receiving first and second packet flows associated with first and second different source ports;

determining, using at least statistical data comprising at least a byte count and packet count, that a third large packet flow comprises an elephant flow;

marking packets of the third packet flow with a differentiated services code point (DSCP) bit in tunnel headers, the DSCP being used for assigning packets of the third packet flow to internal queues;

determining that the first and second flows are part of a larger third packet flow that was broken up into the first and second flow;

combining the first and second flows into one packet flow;

forwarding the combined packet flow to a destination of the combined packet flow.

12. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions for combining the first and second flows comprises a set of instructions for using sequence numbers stored in header values of packets of the received first and second flows to order the packets in the combined flow.

13. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions for combining the first and second flows comprises sets of instructions for:

receiving a first packet;

determining that there is at least a second packet that is prior to the first packet in the third packet flow that has not yet been received;

storing the first packet in a storage until the second packet has been received.

14. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions for combining the first and second flows further comprises sets of instructions for:

receiving the second packet;

forwarding the second packet to the destination;

retrieving the first packet from the storage;

forwarding the first packet to the destination.

15. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the set of instructions for determining that the first and second packet flows are part of the larger third packet flow comprises a set of instructions for using an elephant flow identifier stored in header values of packets of the first and second packet flows to determine that the packets are part of the third packet flow.

16. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein the program is implemented by an edge forwarding element (EFE).

17. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 16 , wherein the EFE is a first EFE, and a second EFE detects that the third packet flow is a large packet flow, breaks up the third packet flow into first and second packet flows, assigns the first and second source ports to packets of the first and second packet flows, and forwards the packets of the first and second flows.

18. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 17 , wherein a non-edge forwarding element between the first and second EFEs in a network uses the first and second source ports to select different paths through the network for the first and second packet flows and forwards the first and second packet flows along the selected different paths.

19. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 11 , wherein packets of the first and second packet flows are encapsulated with encapsulating packet headers that store the first and second source ports.

20. The non-transitory machine readable medium of claim 19 , wherein the encapsulating headers are tunnel headers used to encapsulate packets exchanged between elements of a logical overlay network.
