Abstract

Claims (23)

1. A method of implanting a spinal cage assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a spinal cage between two vertebrae, the spinal cage having an interior and having at least some empty space defined by an internal surface, a spin-plate positionable with respect to the spinal cage between an undeployed position and a deployed position relative to the interior of the spinal cage, and wherein the spinal cage comprises one or more posts protruding into the interior and interacting with the spin-plate;

preventing rotation of the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage in at least one rotational direction when the spin-plate interacts with the one or more posts in at least one of the deployed position and the undeployed position; and

preventing rotation of the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage in the at least one rotational direction when the spin-plate interacts with the one or more posts in the undeployed position.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the spin-plate includes a disc interacting with the one or more posts.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the disc includes one or more stop peaks preventing rotation of the spin plate relative to the spinal cage.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the disc includes a tapered edge.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the post includes a frustoconical head.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein preventing rotation of the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage in the at least one rotational direction when the spin-plate interacts with the one or more posts is in both the deployed position and the undeployed position.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein preventing rotation of the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage in the at least one rotational direction when the spin-plate interacts with the one or more posts is in the deployed position.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein a first torque amount due to interaction between the spin-plate and the one or more posts is required to rotate the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage when the spin-plate is at the undeployed position; and

wherein a second torque amount due to interaction between the spin-plate and the one or more posts is required to rotate the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage when the spin-plate is at the deployed position.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the first torque amount is greater than the second torque amount.

10. A method of implanting a spinal cage assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a spinal cage between two vertebrae, the spinal cage having an interior and having at least some empty space defined by an internal surface, a spin-plate positionable with respect to the spinal cage defines a stowed position in which the spin-plate is entirely contained within the interior of the spinal cage, a deployed position in which a part of the spin-plate extends outside the interior of the spinal cage, and an intermediate position between the stowed position and the deployed position, and wherein the spin-plate includes one or more first structures and the spinal cage includes one or more second structures that is capable of interacting with the one or more first structures of the spin-plate;

releasably retaining the spin-plate against rotation in the stowed position such that a first torque, resulting from the interaction of the one or more first structures and the one or more second structures, rotates the spin-plate out of the stowed position toward the deployed position; and

releasably retaining the spin-plate against rotation in the intermediate position such that a second torque, resulting from the interaction of the one or more first structures and the one or more second structures, rotates the spin-plate out of the intermediate position toward the deployed position, wherein the first torque is different than the second torque.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the first torque is greater than the second torque.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the one or more first structures comprises one or more discs and the one or more second structures comprises one or more posts.

13. A method of implanting a spinal cage assembly, comprising the steps of:

positioning a spinal cage between two vertebrae, the spinal cage having an interior and having at least some empty space defined by an internal surface, a spin-plate positionable with respect to the spinal cage between an undeployed position and a deployed position relative to the interior of the spinal cage, and wherein the spinal cage comprises one or more posts protruding into the interior and interacting with the spin-plate;

preventing rotation of the spin-plate relative to the spinal cage in at least one rotational direction when the spin-plate interacts with the one or more posts in at least one of the deployed position and the undeployed position; and

wherein the spin-plate includes a disc interacting with the one or more posts, and the post includes a frustoconical head.
