Abstract

In one aspect, a movable barrier operator includes a housing and a motor. The movable barrier operator further includes a camera mount that is connected to the housing and that supports a camera. The camera mount is configured to facilitate movement of the camera between a storage position wherein at least a portion of the camera is inside the housing and an operative position wherein the at least a portion of the camera is outside of the housing.

Claims (70)

1. A movable barrier operator comprising:

a housing;

a motor in the housing;

a camera including a lens;

a camera mount connected to the housing and configured to facilitate pivoting of the camera relative to the housing between a storage position wherein the lens is inside the housing and an operative position wherein the lens is outside of the housing;

a handle portion of the camera mount exterior to the housing, the handle portion configured to be manually manipulated by a hand of a user exterior to the housing to pivot the camera relative to the housing between the storage position and the operative position; and

wherein the camera is deenergized in the storage position and wherein manual manipulation of the handle portion by the user downwardly away from the housing causes the camera to pivot downwardly from the storage position to the operative position and automatically causes the movable barrier operator to energize the camera.

2. The movable barrier operator of claim 1 wherein the camera is pivotal relative to the housing about a single pivot axis defined by the camera mount between the storage position and the operative position.

3. The movable barrier operator of claim 1 wherein an entirety of the camera is inside the housing with the camera in the storage position.

4. The movable barrier operator of claim 1 wherein the housing includes an upper wall and a lower wall; and

wherein the camera mount defines a pivot axis at a fixed vertical position relative to the upper and lower walls of the housing, the camera pivotal about the pivot axis between the storage and operative positions while the pivot axis is at the fixed vertical position.

5. The movable barrier operator of claim 4 wherein the pivot axis is above the lower wall of the housing with the camera in the storage position and the operative position.

6. The movable barrier operator of claim 1 wherein the camera mount includes a floor, the camera is fixed relative to the floor, and the floor is pivotal relative to the housing to shift the camera between the storage position and the operative position.

7. The movable barrier operator of claim 6 wherein the floor and camera are pivotal relative to the housing about an axis extending in the housing.

8. The movable barrier operator of claim 6 wherein the housing includes a lower wall and the floor is level with the lower wall in the storage position.

9. The movable barrier operator of claim 1 wherein the housing, the camera mount, or a combination thereof includes an affordance adjacent the handle portion of the camera mount, the affordance configured to facilitate grasping of the handle portion by the user.

10. The movable barrier operator of claim 9 wherein the affordance comprises a recess.

11. A movable barrier operator comprising:

a housing;

a motor in the housing;

a camera;

a camera mount configured to facilitate movement of the camera between a storage position wherein at least a portion of the camera is inside the housing and an operative position wherein the at least a portion of the camera is outside of the housing;

a handle portion of the camera mount adjacent the housing, the handle portion configured to be pivoted downwardly away from the housing which causes the camera to move from the storage position to the operative position;

a switch operably coupled to the camera, the switch having an off configuration wherein the switch inhibits energization of the camera and an on configuration wherein the switch facilitates energization of the camera;

the switch including a switch housing mounted to a first portion of the camera mount and an actuator positioned to contact a second portion of the camera mount; and

wherein movement of the camera between the storage position and the operative position moves the first and second portions of the camera mount relative to one another and shifts the actuator relative to the switch housing to transition the switch between the off configuration and the on configuration and facilitate operation of the camera with the camera in the operative position.

12. The movable barrier operator of claim 11 further comprising a processor operably coupled to the switch, the processor configured to determine the camera is in the operative position based at least in part on a signal from the switch.

13. The movable barrier operator of claim 11 further comprising a wireless communication module operably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the switch inhibits operation of the wireless communication module with the camera in the storage position and facilitates operation of the wireless communication module with the camera in the operative position.

14. The movable barrier operator of claim 11 further comprising a component selected from the group consisting of:

an infrared light source and infrared camera;

a microphone;

an RF antenna;

an ambient light sensor;

a LED;

a speaker; and

a processor;

wherein the component is operably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the switch inhibits operation of the component with the camera in the storage position and facilitates operation of the component with the camera in the operative position.

15. The movable barrier operator of claim 11 wherein the camera mount is configured to facilitate pivotal movement of the camera between the storage position and the operative position.

16. The movable barrier operator of claim 11 wherein an entirety of the camera is within the housing with the camera in the storage position.

17. A movable barrier operator comprising:

a housing;

a motor in the housing;

a camera including a lens;

a camera mount connected to the housing and including a support, the camera fixed relative to the support;

the support and the camera are pivotal together relative to the housing between an upper, storage position wherein the lens is inside the housing and a lower, operative position wherein the lens is outside of the housing;

the support including a handle portion adjacent to the housing with the support and camera in the storage position, the handle portion facilitating a user to grasp the handle portion and pivot the handle portion downwardly away from the housing which causes the support and camera to pivot together downwardly from the upper, storage position to the lower, operative position;

wherein the camera is energized in the lower, operative position and wherein pivoting of the support and the camera from the lower, operative position to the upper, storage position automatically causes the movable barrier operator to inhibit operation of the camera.

18. The movable barrier operator of claim 17 further comprising a switch operably coupled to the camera and configured to inhibit operation of the camera with the camera in the storage position.

19. The movable barrier operator of claim 18 wherein the switch includes an actuator and a switch housing, the actuator shifting relative to the switch housing with movement of the camera from the operative position to the storage position.

20. The movable barrier operator of claim 17 further comprising a switch operatively coupled to the camera, the switch configured to be actuated by a portion of the camera mount as the camera is moved from the operative position to the storage position so that the switch inhibits operation of the camera with the camera in the storage position.

21. The movable barrier operator of claim 17 further comprising a switch configured to inhibit operation of the camera with the camera in the storage position; and

a processor operably coupled to the switch and configured to determine the camera is in the storage position based at least in part on a signal from the switch.

22. The movable barrier operator of claim 17 further comprising:

a switch operably coupled to the camera and configured to inhibit operation of the camera with the camera in the storage position;

a wireless communication module operably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the switch inhibits operation of the wireless communication module with the camera in the storage position and facilitates operation of the wireless communication module with the camera in the operative position.

23. The movable barrier operator of claim 17 further comprising:

a switch operably coupled to the camera and configured to inhibit operation of the camera with the camera in the storage position;

a component selected from the group consisting of:

an infrared light source and infrared camera;

a microphone;

an RF antenna;

an ambient light sensor;

a LED;

a speaker; and

a processor;

wherein the component is operably coupled to the switch; and

wherein the switch inhibits operation of the component with the camera in the storage position and facilitates operation of the component with the camera in the operative position.
