Abstract

A fail-safe release mechanism for use with patient positioning support apparati having a base structure and a patient support structure, to prevent collapse of the patient support during disconnection of the patient support structure from the base structure.

Claims (42)

1. A patient positioning apparatus comprising:

a base;

a connection assembly;

a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;

a first lock engaged with the base and the connection assembly to couple the connection assembly with the base; and

a second lock engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support to couple the connection assembly with the patient support,

wherein engagement of the second lock substantially blocks disengagement of the first lock.

2. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 1 , wherein the connection assembly comprises a first member and a second member coupled to the first member, the first member comprising first and second apertures, the second member comprising a bore and a notch.

3. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the second member is slidable relative to the first member along a length of the first member.

4. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the second member is slidable relative to the first member along a length of the first member in opposite directions along the length of the first member.

5. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch and the second lock extends through the second aperture and the bore.

6. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 5 , wherein the first aperture is misaligned with the notch, the second aperture being aligned with the bore.

7. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 5 , wherein the first aperture is offset from the notch, the second aperture being coaxial with the bore.

8. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the second member comprises a wall defining the notch, the wall directly engaging the first lock.

9. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first member includes a proximal end surface and an opposite distal end surface, the notch extending into the proximal end surface, the bore being positioned between the proximal end surface and the distal end surface.

10. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the first lock includes a body having a first outer diameter and a key notch portion having a reduced second outer diameter, a wall of the second member that defines the notch being positioned in the key notch portion.

11. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein the notch is U-shaped.

12. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 2 , wherein a pin extends through a through-bore of the first member, the through-bore having a diameter greater than a diameter of the pin such that the pin is configured to translate within the through-bore.

13. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 12 , wherein a pin extends through a through-bore of the first member and a hole of the second member, the through-bore having a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the pin such that the pin is configured to translate within the through-bore.

14. A patient positioning apparatus comprising:

a base;

a connection assembly comprising a first member and a second member slidably coupled to the first member, the first member comprising first and second apertures, the second member comprising a notch and a bore;

a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;

a first lock engaged with the base and the connection assembly such that the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch; and

a second lock engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support such that the second lock extends through the second aperture and the bore,

wherein engagement of the second lock substantially blocks disengagement of the first attachment lock.

15. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 14 , wherein the first aperture is misaligned with the notch, the second aperture being aligned with the bore.

16. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 14 , wherein the first aperture is offset from the notch, the second aperture being coaxial with the bore.

17. A patient positioning apparatus comprising:

a base;

a connection assembly comprising a first member and a second member slidably coupled to the first member, the first member comprising first and second apertures, the second member comprising a notch and a bore;

a patient support removably attached to the base by the connection assembly;

a first lock configured to be engaged with the base and the connection assembly such that the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch; and

a second lock configured to be engaged with the connection assembly and the patient support such that the second lock extends through the second aperture and the bore,

wherein the apparatus is movable between a first orientation in which the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch and the second lock is spaced apart from the second aperture and the bore such that the first lock is removable from the first aperture and the notch and a second orientation in which the first lock extends through the first aperture and the notch and the second lock extends the second aperture and the bore such that the first lock is prevented from being removed from the first aperture and the notch.

18. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 17 , wherein:

the first aperture is aligned with the notch when the apparatus is in the first orientation and the second aperture is misaligned with the bore when the apparatus is in the first orientation; and

the first aperture is misaligned with the notch when the apparatus is in the second orientation and the second aperture is aligned with the bore when the apparatus is in the second orientation.

19. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 17 , wherein:

the first aperture is coaxial with the notch when the apparatus is in the first orientation and the second aperture is offset the bore when the apparatus is in the first orientation; and

the first aperture is offset from the notch when the apparatus is in the second orientation and the second aperture is coaxial with the bore when the apparatus is in the second orientation.

20. A patient positioning apparatus as recited in claim 17 , wherein a pin extends through a through-bore of the first member and a hole of the second member, the through-bore having a diameter that is greater than a diameter of the pin such that the pin translates within the through-bore as the apparatus moves between the first and second orientations.
