Abstract

Claims (27)

1 . A wearable monitoring device, comprising:

a housing having a physical size and shape that is adapted to couple to a body of a user, wherein the housing comprises a photo sensor housing that protrudes above a base surface of the wearable monitoring device so as to press against skin of the user when worn;

a periodic light source and a photo detector positioned to receive periodic light emitted by the periodic light source;

a first light pipe, disposed in the housing and optically coupled to the periodic light source, to direct or transmit light from the periodic light source along a predetermined path to an outer surface of the housing; and

processing circuitry configured to calculate a heart rate of the user using data generated by the periodic light source, wherein the processing circuitry is configured to:

(i) emit a first set of one or more light pulses in a wavelength using the periodic light source;

(ii) determine a slope of a detected light value versus an emitted light value for the first set of the one or more pulses;

(iii) choose a new emitted light value based on the determined slope;

(iv) when the first set of one or more light pulses interacts with the user's skin or tissue and the first set of one or more light pulses is detected by the photo detector, initiate operation of the wearable monitoring device in a first mode at the new emitted light value; and

(v) when the first set of one or more light pulses is not detected by the photo detector or when the first set of one or more light pulses has a different intensity or pattern from a baseline intensity or pattern, initiate operation of the wearable monitoring device in a second mode, the second mode having a lower power state than the first mode.

2 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the periodic light source comprises two periodic light sources straddling the photo detector.

3 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the photo sensor housing protrudes at least about one (1) millimeter (mm) above the base surface of the wearable monitoring device.

4 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

determine a difference between the first set of one or more light pulses detected by the photo detector in the first mode and the second mode; and

use the difference to determine whether the wearable monitoring device is being worn by the user or not.

5 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 4 , wherein the first mode comprises an operational mode of the wearable monitoring device in which the wearable monitoring device continues to emit or detect light pulses and monitor heart rate of the user.

6 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 5 , wherein the first mode comprises emitting the first set of the one or more light pulses in a low intensity manner for a percentage of time.

7 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 6 , wherein the second mode comprises a non-operational mode in which the wearable monitoring device does not emit or detect light pulses.

8 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 7 , wherein, during the second mode, the processing circuitry stops monitoring the heart rate of the user.

9 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 8 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

monitor motion of the wearable monitoring device.

10 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 9 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

switch from the second mode to the first mode when the motion is detected indicating that the user is likely wearing the wearable monitoring device.

11 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the processing circuitry is further configured to:

measure heart rate or other heartbeat waveform related signals concurrently when emitting the first set of one or more light pulses.

12 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the first set of one or more light pulses interacting with the user's skin or tissue is detected by capturing signal variation caused by heartbeat-related blood flow in one or more capillary vessels of the user.

13 . The wearable monitoring device of claim 1 , wherein the periodic light source comprises at least one of a PPG sensor or an LED sensor.
